Missbeholder wrote: Sat Aug 28, 2021 2:54 pm I sort of bumped into a video of American Pharoah that makes me question what I thought I saw. It was a video of AP in the ring at the Saratoga Yearling Sale 2013. He hammered that day for $300K, but must have RNA'd because I know Zayat never actually sold him. Anyway, beside the point.

He was there in that ring as a yearling with a pretty normal looking tail! It wasn't especially long by any stretch, but it did reach to just below his hocks. I could have sworn that when I saw him in the winner's circle after the Frontrunner (now renamed for him), he had this stumpy little tail that didn't reach his hocks! Did the youngster that attacked his tail with his chompers get to him after the yearling sale but before he went to Bob for training? I'm a little confused now. Did I not see what I thought I saw?

I know it matters not at this point. I just want to know if my eyes deceived me. 🤔
Yes AP's tail was so short because they *think* a pasture mate bit it off. I think they joked it was Mr. Z or it was Mr. Z.

IIRC Zayat bought AP back at the ring because he didn't want to sell him.

Retrospectiv: No one bred appaloosas to have skimpy tails. It's purely part of the gene that causes 'appaloosa' characteristics (LP, leopard complex).

Thanks for that information. It's good to know that humans haven't genetically abused a horse breed the way some dog and cat breeders have.

No one bid on him besides Ingordo who was working as Zayat's agent to push the price. When no one else bid, Zayat had to buy him back. Zayat said he told Ingordo to outbid anyone until AP's price hit $1 million but if that was true, why wouldn't he have just set his reserve at 1 million?

Royal Number, 2018 c (Palace Malice - Hartigan, by Include) - ran 3rd in the Frederico Tesio S. at Pimlico
He has a pretty cool blaze but it looks like he has at least one blue eye.

Idk why but images don't load in for me, so I guess go to http://www.fairhilltrainingcenter.com/
about a 1/4 or 1/3 down the page. Anyway its a ton of horse pictures to look at so no loss going there to look. ;)

It looks like his other eye is partially blue.

What color is this Ransom the Moon colt? The auction page says he’s a palomino, but his mane and tail look too dark.

IIRC, the Jockey Club is a bit limited in the colors they will use for registering a horse. Frost Queen looks like a cremello, but palomino may be the closest the JC can come for their registry purposes. Who knows what her colt will end up as, but right now I'd just call him a dun. :P ;)

if the dam is Cremello, which she looks like, the foal is buckskin.

If she is Palomino, the foal could pretty much be any color.

If the colt ends up buckskin (which seems possible), what color will the Jockey Club assign him? Bay?

Yep. They've done it before. The one I can think of off the top of my head is Faux Finish but I'm sure there are many others.

The dam is cremello (double cream on chestnut), the foal is buckskin.
There is no dun in TBs, but there is nd1 which can cause dorsal stripes and false primitives.

OK, probably showing ignorance here, but doesn't a buckskin have to have black points? This youngster doesn't have any black on his legs except for maybe a light brushing of it there on his left ankle. Maybe I'm wrong?

In the picture what you see is the colt's foal coat which he's beginning to shed. If you look at his left front fetlock, you can see the black hair that's already visible from underneath. By the time his legs are finished shedding, he will have black points.

TBird above is correct. Foal camo is the buff colouring you see here on the lower extremeties and underside. The black points can take a few years to come in on some.

Not particularly unique but Old School (Frankel x Auld Alliance) is a very pretty light bay that scratched after her post parade at Saratoga.

Norman Queen (Normandy Invasion x Unbridled Blessing) who finished fourth in the last Saratoga race has a massive white blaze and four tall white stockings.
