She wasn't kidding, her shot fit all of the day dreams I had back then about what The Black and his head would look like!
I tried to copy the link off of Twitter correctly but I'm not sure if I did.

Oh, wow. Registered gray or not, in that photo, Ironstone DEFINITELY looks like The Black!

If Ironstone is actually going to be grey, it appears he's still in the steel-black stage. Caravaggio looked like that when I first saw him race at Ascot; all black with just a few grey hairs showing in his tail. :D

Not a thoroughbred actually but a pretty black Arabian Hargan (Al Mamun Monlau) won a G2 for Arabians in France.

I like the Brazen Beau filly. Very stout.

Pretty sure La Hara, who is entered in the Saratoga final, is black.

Hip 2038 in the Keeneland September sale is registered dkb/br but looks black. I think he's very handsome.

Azart Bars (Ergyias x Abrianna, by Lemon Drop Kid) won the G1 Pavlovsky Derby in Russia. The sire is a War Chant/Southern Fiction model who was a G2W in Russia. "Azart" is Russian for "excitement."

I notice he is wearing a Tonalist x Battle (?) halter but I'm supposing they will just reuse harnesses from the sale horses they bought on any horse.

Probably this one: https://www.pedigreequery.com/battle+king4 https://hippodrom.ru/modules/horses/hor ... e_id=46245

I would guess they save the nice leather halters for the best horses or maybe just photos? They probably use cheap nylon ones otherwise. When purse prices aren't high, which they aren't in Russia, spending 10x as much on leather halters probably isn't done often. I've noticed this in other countries as well where the purse prices aren't high. Like for example the purse for the Pavlovskiy Derby was 950000 Russian Rubles which is 13k USD.

I wish more modern TBs looked like this one: streamlined and sleek.

To Be Fix (Bathyrhon x Lady Fix, by Turgeon) is registered "bay." She is the winning horse.

Implosion (Not This Time x Quite Explosive) is registered dark bay on PQ and Equibase, but is registered black through the Keeneland catalogue. She won Race 2 at Churchill today and looks black to me.

There's a NY-bred filly by Central Banker named Quantitativbreezin who looks true black despite her "dk b/br" designation.

Should nominate that one for the Amusing Names thread.

Have to follow this little guy as he grows up. Al Beedaa is chestnut.

Brian Malloy @brianwmalloy
Some discussion with the passing of Erhaab that he was nearly black. He may have been black which is rare but does occur in Thoroughbreds. Here is Erhaab’s half-sister Al Beedaa with her Flintshire colt this spring. We genetically tested his coat and it came back a true black.

Black isn't really that rare, it just requires a horse to be E_ aa. Erhaab was definitely black.
Because black has many shades and some horses sun fade, some mineral fade etc it can be hard to determine if they are black. Shame genetic testing isn't more common in TBs.

I’ve never heard of mineral fade—what is that? Too much or not enough of a given mineral?

Mineral defiency, often copper and zinc can effect how a coat fades (or doesn't).
