first race on the card today at Ascot-
7 Furlongs. (Turf) CheshamL89K Chesham S. Purse $89,000 FOR TWO YEAR
OLDS, WHOSE SIRE OR DAM WON A RACE OF A MILE AND A QUARTER OR OVER
(THIS INCLUDES RACES IN EXCESS OF NINE FURLONGS AND 110 YARDS AND IN
EXCESS OF 1900M).
Is this a common type of race condition in the UK?
I don't recall ever seeing this stateside (though we have many other stipulations, e.g. not having raced in a certain timeframe, not having won a race above a certain condition, etc.) Never saw anything stipulating the sire or dam had to have won over a particular distance before.

ooh the Queen came so close to a winner in the first - but she has another now in the next race.
have to say i just saw oisin murphy give an interview to nick luck on nbc and he seemed so charming - i was perhaps too hard on him yesterday - he made me laugh with some comments he had this morning - he rides the Queen's horse now and i wish them the best!

Oisin Murphy will be the leading jockey of the meet. I'm happy for him. He had a really rough 2nd half of 2020 and a 6 month ban, but he has clearly bounced back better than ever and is a great ambassador for the sport.

Not trying to rag on him, but why are his mounts all over the course? I've been watching Ascot all week and this seems to be a recurring theme.

It’s unusual even here in the UK. The race conditions were changed back in 2019 I think… prior to that it specified that the *sire* specifically (rather than sire or dam) needed to have won over a mile and a quarter.peeptoad wrote: ↑Sat Jun 19, 2021 7:42 am first race on the card today at Ascot-

My understanding is that the race is intended to reward horses that will go on to be classic types rather than pure 2yo speed, but it’s notable (and a bit concerning) that they’ve had to broaden its eligibility criteria, although it’s logical that future staying ability could come from either side.

Spanish Mission (Noble Mission) won the G2 Yorkshire Cup at York. 14 furlongs.
Interesting to note Wells Farhh Go (Farhh) finished 4/5. This was his first race after a 587 day break.

I don't mind the extension of the dam, but can we discuss how more than 9f counts as 10f?KatieD wrote: ↑Sat Jun 19, 2021 12:59 pmIt’s unusual even here in the UK. IIRC, 1900m would be 9 1/2 furlongs. Pretty close to 10. If they were looking for breeding that could provide horses capable of getting 10 furlongs, I can understand why they extended the qualification to include 9 1/2.

Well then make it 9f, IMO.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 19, 2021 8:52 pm IIRC, 1900m would be 9 1/2 furlongs. Pretty close to 10. If they were looking for breeding that could provide horses capable of getting 10 furlongs, I can understand why they extended the qualification to include 9 1/2.
