All those foals and the yearling all have red (chestnut) dams. Red to red always produces red, that's just basic genetics so every chestnut mare he's bred will produce a chestnut foal. So I went down a rabbit hole this weekend, and I think I came back up with some interesting thoughts regarding the breedings that are working with California Chrome.
To start, this all comes from the realization of what a great team Durbar , the Derby winner from the A4 female family, and 13-c member Frizette ( both her and some of her daughters ) made in the breeding shed. It made me look into how Chrome was doing with mares from this family just to see if there was an affinity there too. Taking advantage of the modern genetic advances, I translated the Bruce Low numbers of the mares bred him to the published mtDNA haplogroups/types which have shown that families 4, 11, and 13 are the same family (I2a1)and share the I2a group with some branches of other families as well. Taking all these together showed some pretty solid results.
For what it is worth, Chrome does appear to share the affinity with this matrilineal line. He has 17 starters from mares of this group: 9 have won (53%), and of the remaining 8, 5 have at least placed in races. Of the three that haven't won or placed, only one has started more than once. Of that 17, 3 are two year olds, including the two, Bid Once and Sol Dorado, that shared the photo finish in their first start this weekend. It isn't just that they are winning at a higher percentage either, this group includes a good percentage of his more highly rated first crop runners (Cilla, California Lily, Miss Delicious, Striking Chrome, Beachside Bunny, and Perseverancia) and the aforementioned Bid Once and Sol Dorado. This group also seems to like turf, allweather, and off tracks more than dry dirt.
In addition to the 14 first crop starters, Chrome has 4 more in his first crop, two of which appear to be in serious training and likely to start this year and another that is named, but does not appear to be in training (which is unfortunate as the filly is out of a grade 1-producing broodmare). The last one is not named and presumably will not likely make it to the track. In South America, of 6 starters from the family, he has 1 winner, Ocean California, and 1 placed. In both the US and South America what is intriguing is that he has more to come. His 2019 crop has 21 total and the 2020 crop has another 18. In South America , the second crop has over double the numbers from the first crop, 26 to 11.
Luckily in Japan, 26 of the foals born this year are from this female family group, which is about a quarter of his first crop. One of his runners in Japan this year, Erie Tesoro, is from this female family as well. She has only gone over dirt so far with her best finish a 4th place.
One of the foals on offer at the select sale this summer is from this female family, the colt out of Baroness Thatcher.

Nephilim(JPN), 2019C. California Chrome(USA) x Like a Million(USA) by Street Sense(USA), broke his maiden at second ask, switched from the turf, in Nakayama 3R 1800m dirt on Sep 19th 2021!!!! 
He is the first JRA winner for the sire.

His dam Like A Million(USA) [o/o Million Seller(USA) o/o Million Gift(JPN) o/o Maplejinsky(USA)] is a familiar name with her family line to me.
Both Beyond A Million(USA) and Nephilim(USA) are bred by Chiyoda Farm's Kentucky branch.
And, of side note, Tale of Ekati(USA) is from the same family.
