Lake Barkley, the white mare with a couple black patches on her rump (very cute), finished fourth in a race at Mountaineer tonight. She has apparently been racing quite frequently recently, finishing third last out.

Yeah her front legs don't look great but she is pretty young. I imagine she wasn't even 6 months when the photos were taken since she was born at the very end of October.

My first thought at seeing that picture was, does her mother know that she's out?

But she's gotta be young to still have ALL of her foal fuzz on like that. If you look closely at the thick-ish pasterns, you can see that they're normal-looking and there is a distinct line of hair. The only part of her without any foal fuzz is that left hind cannon.

I have no idea. The first few generations seem to be all Thoroughbred, the like 8th dam is only called 'Gallardo Mare' on Pedigreequery/Allbreedpedigree, maybe the Non TB is somewhere back there in the damline?

There have apparently been a handful of TBs in the US who have relatives that got a "thoroughbred" qualification without being a true TB.

One of them was trained by O'neil I think?

This link I posted above viewtopic.php?f=4&t=7380 explains the process of how a horse gets into the TB studbook, its not easy and it takes real dedication. It was a really fascinating thing to research when I found out about it.

Given that AQPS/Non-TB are almost exclusively racing in jumps and National Hunt flat races, and that he has very close relations who won graded stakes over jumps, this horse probably could be upgraded if his owners wanted.

There is a Non-TB/AQPS division for racing in the USA, it's called Appendix QH.
