Lei Papale(JPN) is only the third horse in JRA history to win a G1 for older horses unbeaten, after Fine Motion(IRE) and Chrysoberyl(JPN).
She is a new star!

She appears smaller than many of her competitors, and IMHO that helped her get over that soggy ground better than horses like Contrail.

She's a special filly but, IMHO, the track may also have played in her favor. With all due respect to Japan's turf courses, the Hanshin track looked like the Everglades.....in a rainstorm.
And with respect to Japan's yielding-turf-loving horses, I got the impression that many in that field wouldn't have minded a little less yield.
If Lei Papale meets Contrail, Gran Alegria, etc. again on a good track, she may not be able to fly away like she did here.

Yuga Kawada (jockey, Lei Papale)
''I had always believed in her outstanding talent since her debut. But, of course, it was a tough ask this time against a top class after registering out first grade-race victory in December. She is an exceptional filly to keep her speed right to the end. Now that she’s a G1 winner, expectations will suddenly be quite high from now on, but I hope to be able bring out her best in each race.''
Yoshito Yahagi (trainer, Contrail)
''We were unlucky. If it had started pouring down a few hours later, things could have been different. Turf condition was everything. True, the winner was very strong today. But our horse didn't handle the soft. Now we have to make a turnaround in the Takarazuka KInen (G1, 2200m turf at Hanshin, June 27th) next.''
Christophe Lemaire (jockey, Gran Alegria)
''I thought she ran a good race remaining calm and focused. But it was not easy to run on such a condition after a layoff. 2000m would not be problematic for her, if the turf was firm.''

The Japan Cup last November was the best race in the world in 2020, according to the new TRC Computer Race Ratings. That is one of many notable differences in our list, published below, compared with the equivalent rankings from the IFHA (International Federation of Horseracing Authorities).
