I was asking a question. I do body clip the horses I work all winter. I assumed that weanlings head to training farms to start the breaking process.
I’m not really clear how body clipping relates to making a TB halter horse?
The sales have become beauty contests in TB world and they have changed the way the young horses are handled and this in turn changes how they grow. They are now fed very specialized diets to help pack on the pounds as well as have scripted exercise routines that are meant to tone those pounds. So you have young growing bones that have way too much muscle mass stressing them from the get go. Also prescribed exercise tends to more regimented and it is like the young human athletes that now only play one sport who show up with repetitive strain injuries, when before, these same kids used to play different sports at different times of the year, thus changing up the stress they were putting on muscle groups. I don't think it is coincidence that the rise in percentage of commercially prepared yearlings has. been inversely proportionally to the starts per year for the TB although the drugs given them along the way have also had a share of the blame.

At this point, no surprises there.

I know Coolmore grabbed Rushing Fall, but where the heck is Stonestreet or Mandy?

Probably the under bidder. Authentic's dam is coming, you think Spendthrift goes all in on her too?

The consolidation of the upper end of the TB market is both fascinating ( but should be a bit terrifying for those in the industry) to watch.
Would like to say the Japanese are still the ones I would emulate- a few choices mares, including a half to Arrogate, all under 2 million.

They definitely try! I don't know if the others will let Spendthrift take her, too.

Thank you. I wanted to keep watching for Flawless to go through... I imagine she won’t be inexpensive!

Do we think is a one off night where they’re still riding high off of Authentic’s win, or is Spendthrift now getting into the elite breed to race game al la Coolmore and Godolphin. They’ve been stocking up (and unloading) stallions for the last 5 years through a revolving door, maybe they realized they won’t get another lightning in a bottle scenario Into Mischief if they don’t get some better mares?

We’ve talked before how they do sell yearlings with a zillion different agents so it’s hard to keep track of how much they make. We also know that all 100 broodmares at Spendthrift are owned by Hughes and to date they’ve bred a pretty paltry amount of stakes winners for an operation of that size.

I guess my main question is, do they send these mares to up and coming stallions when the time comes? Do they sell the offspring or keep them to race?

Flanders wrote: Sun Nov 08, 2020 9:38 pm Spendthrift has money. B. Waynes Hughes and his two kids are valued at 9.9 billion. Dad blowing 100m on some horses to race at age 87 is fine. Let him have fun.
No problem with that. I think every billionaire should aspire to spend their entire fortune before they die. Just think there are some serious red flags in the small print of the MRH that have always bothered me. However, one doesn't become a billionaire by not knowing how to accumulate money in whatever way it works.
I want to think that he had so much fun this year with Authentic that it rekindled his love of the racing side of the sport. Sure he still raced horses but it wasn't like the early 2000s. At some point earlier this year we discussed that in a thread, how much B. Wayne Hughes/Spendthrift had stepped away from the racing side. Going from roughly 125-150 starts a year to 25-50 (50 is pushing it). Now its November 2020 and they have the most starts, including partnerships, in probably 10 years+.

okay, let's go insane theory here. I want to state I am not insane, just thinking of when Beholder kept getting entered and withdrawn from the November sales because he didn't want broodmares of that caliber.
What if, they just race them and sell them again next year? Thinking they will be worth more money after the pandemic? Remember me in a year if that happens.

If they keep them, I would imagine they sell the foals but tell everyone they will stay in on them and make partnerships.
