PHIPPS-BRED STALLION IMAGINING'S FIRST STARTER TO DEBUT ON FRIDAY
Colt has deep Phipps bloodlines.

Phipps-bred multiple-graded-stakes-winning stallion IMAGINING's first runner from his first crop is entered to race on Friday. Two-year-old colt DREAMING OF LOVE, is entered as #9 in Laurel Park Race 1 on Friday, a $40,000 maiden special weight for 2-year-olds going 4½ furlongs on dirt (post time 1:00 pm ET). Jockey Wesley Ho has the mount.

Trained by John J. Robb, Dreaming of Love has three timed workouts since March 30, all at Laurel. His most recent was on Saturday (Apr. 13) breezing 5 furlongs from the gate on dirt in 1:02:00 (ranking 4th of 12).

Bred by Bowman and Higgins Stable, Dreaming of Love was foaled in Maryland on Feb. 8, 2017. He is owned by No Guts No Glory Farm and Marisa Gino.

Dreaming of Love's sire is Phipps-bred Grade 1-winning millionaire IMAGINING (Giant's Causeway—Daydreaming, by A.P. PHIPPS STABLE'S BREAKING THE RULES MAKING GRACE 1 DEBUT ON KENTUCKY DERBY UNDERCARD

PHIPPS STABLE’s homebred graded stakes placed 4-year-old colt BREAKING THE RULES is entered for his first career Grade 1 start in the $1 million Turf Classic Stakes on Saturday, the 11th race on the Kentucky Derby undercard at Churchill Downs. The race for 4-year-olds and older will be run on the turf at 1⅛ mile. Due to the step up in class, Breaking the Rules’ morning-line odds are 15-1 and he will break from post #8.

Breaking the Rules has a career record of 4 wins, 2 seconds, and 1 third-place finish from 9 career starts with earnings of nearly $233,000. He won his career debut in March 2018 at Gulfstream Park, which he followed with a second win against allowance company in May at Belmont Park.

His first stakes win came in the $75,000 Tropical Park Derby at Gulfstream in late December, a race that he won by 3½ lengths. He stepped up to race against graded stakes company in the $150,000 Canadian Turf Stakes (G3) in early March at Gulfstream where he finished the runner up, short by just a head. His start in the Turf Classic Stakes (G1) on Saturday at Churchill will end a two-month layoff.

Like other Phipps horses, Breaking the Rules was broken and pre-trained at Niall Brennan Stables in Ocala, Florida. His training over the last half year has taken him from Belmont in the fall to sunny Payson Park Thoroughbred Training Center in Indiantown, Florida for the winter. He returned to training at Belmont for a couple of weeks in April before shipping to Churchill in late April.

Hall of Fame trainer Claude R. "Shug" McGaughey won the Turf Classic Stakes in 1993 with Claiborne Farm homebred Lure, who led gate-to-wire under jockey Mike Smith. The McGaughey barn has won a quarter of its 12 graded stakes starts in 2019 and has finished in the money in half of them.

Jockey Jose L. Ortiz – who rode the Tom Amoss-trained Serengeti Empress (by Alternation) to victory on Friday in the $1.25 million Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill – takes over Breaking the Rules' mount from his brother Irad Ortiz Jr. (who had ridden him in 8 of his 9 career starts). Jose Ortiz ranks third in the nation for earnings with nearly $7.4 million, behind only his brother Irad Ortiz Jr. with $9.6 million and Javier Castellano with $9.3 million.

For the Turf Classic Stakes, Irad Ortiz is will be riding the Chad Brown-trained multiple graded stakes winner Bricks and Mortar (post #12), the impressive 5/2 morning line favorite with 7 wins and 2 third-place finishes from 9 starts. He rode the 5-year-old son of Giant's Causeway to victory in the $7 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational Turf Stakes (G1) in late January at Gulfstream and the $300,000 Muniz Memorial Handicap (G2) in late March at Fair Grounds Race Course and Slots.

Breaking the Rules (by Claiborne Farm stallion War Front) is the second of three foals out of Protesting (by A.P. Indy) and thus is a half sibling to Phipps homebreds Bombs Away (born 2013, gelding by Smart Strike, winner at ages 3 and 4) and Performer (b. 2016, colt by Speightstown, finished 3rd in only start thus far).

BELMONT’S GOLD FEVER STAKES PAYS HOMAGE TO THE PHIPPS HOMEBRED

Belmont’s feature race on Sunday is the $100,000 Gold Fever Stakes for 3 year olds going 6 furlongs on dirt. The race is named after Cynthia Phipps’ homebred colt Gold Fever, trained by Claude R. "Shug" McGaughey.

As a 3 year old in 1996 with now Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith aboard, Gold Fever (Forty Niner—Lead Kindly Light, by Majestic Light) won the NYRA Mile Handicap (G1, Aqueduct), Riva Ridge Stakes (G3, Belmont), and Discovery H. (G3, Aqu.). He suffered an injury in training in early 1997 that ended his racing career, one that included 12 finishes on the board from 18 starts over two season.

He began his stud career at William S. Farish III’s Lane's End Farm in Versailles, Kentucky. From 12 crops, his progeny won 847 races, including 32 blacktype stakes wins and places, with total earnings of nearly $20.4 million. His most accomplished offspring included four-time Canadian champion colt A Bit O’Gold and 6-time GSW sprinter mare Gold Mover.

Cynthia Phipps (1945-2007) was Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps' sister who raced using her grandmother Gladys Mills Phipps' distinguished Wheatley Stable silks of yellow with purple sleeves and cap. In addition to Gold Fever, her New York-based stable raced grade 1 winners Christmas Past and Versailles Treaty, as well as several other graded stakes winners.

HONOR SYSTEM SEEKING FIRST WIN IN SECOND START FRIDAY AT BELMONT

Phipps Stable’s three-year-old homebred gelding Honor System (Candy Ride {ARG}—Place of Honor, by First Samurai) is seeking a maiden victory on Friday in his second career start. He’s entered in Race 1 at Belmont Park, a maiden claimer with a purse of $52,000 going one mile on turf with a post time of 1:30 PM ET. Honor System drew the outside post #12 and jockey Jose Lezcano has the mount.

Honor System finished seventh in a ten-horse field in his debut on April 6 at Gulfstream Park. The race was a $49,100 maiden special weight that went one mile and a sixteenth. With jockey Jeffrey Sanchez aboard, Honor System broke from post #7 and saved ground in the first turn before trailing the field at the half mile marker. He entered the stretch on the rail and was taken two to three wide where he passed one runner but didn’t have enough left to move up further.

Let's hope he can move forward on his home track with a hot jockey to get his maiden victory. His jockey Jose Lezcano is off to a strong Belmont meet, tied for the most wins (15), with a winning percentage of 33 percent and finishing in the top three for 62 percent of his mounts.

McGAUGHEY GOING FOR FIFTH DIXIE STAKES WIN SATURDAY WITH INSPECTOR LYNLEY

Stuart Janney & Phipps Stable’s six-year-old multiple graded stakes winner Inspector Lynley (by Lemon Drop Kid) is looking to pad his resume on Saturday with a win the $250,000 Dixie Stakes (G2) on the Preakness undercard at Pimlico. The race for three-year-olds and upward is scheduled to go one and a sixteenth mile on turf at approximately 5:39 PM ET.

Despite entering the race with the second-favorite morning line odds of 7/2—behind 3/1 Catholic Boy (by More Than Ready), a 2018 Grade 1 winner on both dirt and turf—he clearly has an advantage when it comes to his trainer Claude R. “Shug” McGaughey’s recent success in the race.

McGaughey has won the Dixie Stakes three times in the last ten runnings (video playlist at http://bit.ly/ShugDixieWins), including victories with Phipps Stable’s Parading (by Pulpit) in 2009, Stuart Janney’s Ironicus (by Distorted Humor) in 2015, and Phipps Stable’s Fire Away (by War Front) in 2018. His first Dixie win came in 1994 with Claiborne Farm homebred Lure (by Danzig).

Over the Dixie’s previous 117 runnings, three other trainers have won the race four times, including R. Wyndham Walden, Max Hirsch, and Ben Jones, none of which have completed the feat since 1950.

Inspector Lynley is coming off of a win in the $100,000 Danger’s Hour Stakes on April 7 at Aqueduct. McGaughey's 2018 Dixie Stakes winner Fire Away also entered the Dixie having last won the Danger's Hour.

One of the most accomplished winners currently in McGaughey’s barn, Inspector Lynley has won stakes races at the ages of 3, 4, 5 and 6, including two victories in the $175,000 Tampa Bay Stakes (G3).

Winning on a fifth Dixie Stakes on Saturday would be another impressive accomplishment for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey and further enhance Inspector Lynley’s stakes-winning career.

"Fly So High is back at Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey's barn at Belmont Park after getting some extended time off at Niall Brennan Training Center in Ocala, Florida.

Owned by Phipps Stable, the 4-year-old daughter of Malibu Moon has not raced since winning last year's Grade 2 Davona Dale at Gulfstream Park 14 months ago, where she was vanned off after the race and had a small tear in a suspensory.

'She's back here, she's training,' McGaughey said. 'She hasn't breezed yet but she's two-minute licking and when she two-minute licks with the big and flawless stride that she's got, it's almost like breezing so she's coming a long.'

McGaughey stated that Fly So High would probably make her comeback this summer at Saratoga.

'I'd like to get one in her before then, but we go up there so early now. It's not six weeks away,' McGaughey said.

Bred in Kentucky by Mt. Brilliant Broodmares II, Fly So High is out of the Quiet American broodmare Quiet Flight and was purchased by the Phipps Stable for $675,000 from the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2016."

WILL BAIL OUT BREAK OUT AT SARATOGA?
Making the Case for Phipps Stable's Bail Out to Break His Maiden on Wednesday

(SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.) — Phipps Stable’s four-year-old colt Bail Out (Arch—Hidden Reserve, by Mr. Prospector) is entered for post #12 in Race 7 at Saratoga on Wednesday, July 17, a $90,000 maiden special weight race for ages three years and older going 8 furlongs on the inner turf (rail set at 9 feet). Post time is scheduled for 4:32 pm ET.

Despite a career record of 8:0-4-1 with $63,331 in earnings, Bail Out has slowly been moving forward, finishing on the board in five of his last six races, all that went nine furlongs on turf. Bail Out earned a Beyer speed figure of 81 in his previous two races, tied for the highest of all 14 potential foes in his race on Wednesday.

Bail Out is ending a two-month layoff and has Eclipse award-winning jockey Jose Ortiz riding. The Phipps homebred has come close to winning all three times Ortiz has previously been on board, finishing a nose (replay at http://bit.ly/kee101018r3), a neck, and one length behind the winners. With Ortiz in the saddle, trainer Shug McGaughey’s barn has won 23 percent of 74 starts since the beginning of 2018.

The Phipps colt comes from a productive immediate family, with three half siblings who are graded stakes winners: Reload (by Hard Spun, winner of $150,000 G3 Canadian Turf S., Gulfstream ’14 and $150,000 G3 Tampa Bay S., Tampa ’16); Philanthropist (by Kris S., winner of $100,000 G3 Queens Co. H., Aqueduct ’05); and, Defer (by Danzig, winner of $100,000 G3 Laurel Futurity, Pimlico ‘04). His dam Hidden Reserve is a multiple-graded-stakes-placed mare.

Given how close he has come multiple times to earning his first win, it looks like all of the pieces may be coming together for him to finally break out and graduate in his first Saratoga start.

Phipps Stable's regally-bred three-year-old colt Awakened (Curlin—Daydreaming, by A.P. Indy) is entered for his career debut on Saturday, January 11 in Race 1 at Gulfstream Park at 12 noon.

VIGILANTES WAY SEEKING FIRST WIN ON SATURDAY

TAMPA, Fla. — Phipps Stable’s Vigilantes Way (Medaglia d’Oro—Salute, by Unbridled), a granddaughter of undefeated Hall of Famer Personal Ensign (by Private Account), is entered on Saturday, April 4 for Race 4 at Tampa Bay Down. The race is an $18,000 maiden special weight for three-year-old fillies going seven furlongs on dirt. Breaking from post position No. 5, she was made the morning line second favorite at 9 to 2. Post time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Eastern time.

The lightly-raced filly is making just her second career start and ending a four-month layoff. She finished third of five at Aqueduct Racetack in December under jockey Declan Carroll. The $70,000 maiden race covered six and a half furlongs on a fast dirt surface. She broke quickly and settled in just off of the pace in the three path where she remained through the far turn before weakening in the upper stretch.

Vigilantes Way looked good in her most recent workouts at Payson Park for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey. On March 21 she breezed four furlongs on dirt in 49.0 seconds, the fastest of 38 that day. She followed that up on March 28 by breezing three furlongs on dirt in 37.0 seconds, the fastest of five.

She is the ninth foal out of Phipps homebred multiple graded stakes-placed Unbridled mare Salute. Her half siblings include multiple graded stakes-winning millionaire colt Mr Speaker (by Pulpit), graded stakes-winning colt Fire Away (by War Front), and graded stakes-placed gelding Snap Decision (by Hard Spun). The first two are in the early stages of their breeding careers as stallions and the last has moved on to a successful award-winning career racing over fences that included a 38-length margin of victory at Saratoga Race Course in 2019.

Jockey Antonio A. Gallardo will be aboard Vigilantes Way. The 32-year-old native of Spain has won the Tampa Bay Downs jockey title four times and is the meet’s current leader with 85 wins and a 23 percent win rate.

Gallardo finished 2019 ranked 6th nationally for wins with 266. One of his notable career wins came in the 2016 Grade III Violet Stakes at Monmouth Park aboard Tammy the Torpedo (by More Than Ready), a multiple graded stakes-winning mare out of Stuart S. Janney III and Phipps Stable's War Chant mare Search and Seizure.

All signs point to Vigilantes Way being in a good place to break her maiden and get her sophomore campaign off to a good start.

PROMISING PHIPPS COLT DREAMS OF TOMORROW RETURNS TO THE DIRT TODAY AT BELMONT

Phipps Stable’s homebred three-year-old colt Dreams of Tomorrow is returning to the dirt for his fifth career start on Saturday, October 31 in Race 3 at Belmont Park, an $80,000 maiden special weight for ages three years and older covering seven furlongs on dirt.

Dreams of Tomorrow is the morning-line second favorite at 7-2 odds and will wear saddle cloth No. 4 while breaking from the five gate in a field reduced to six entries. Jockey Jose Ortiz—who rode the colt for two second-place finishes over the dirt earlier this year—has the mount.

His Hall of Fame trainer Claude R. “Shug” McGaughey stated in mid-July of this year that Dreams of Tomorrow’s racing future is “promising” and that “the timing of stuff has gotten in his way a little bit.”

He trained forwardly as a juvenile in 2019, with Mr. McGaughey having indicated that he “was ready to run at the end of June [last year] but just got some 2-year-old growing things” that forced him to back off. His workout history shows no timed breezes from last October through February of this year, but the promise he had showed in training as a juvenile was strong enough for the barn to make him a Triple Crown nominee earlier in the year.

From four career starts, he’s never finished off of the board, crossing the finish line in third in his April debut followed by second-place finishes in June and August. The colt’s last race on October 9 at Keeneland was his only turf start in which he finished fourth. (See past performances below.)

Sired by one of the nation’s leading sires Speightstown, Dreams of Tomorrow's maternal line is also first rate. He is the first foal out of Phipps broodmare Sabbatical who hails from the successful Get Lucky branch of blue hen mare La Troienne, “one of the hottest of the early 21st century” according to pedigree expert Avalyn Hunter.

Post time is scheduled for 1:45 pm Eastern. Track conditions are muddy this morning with the weather forecast calling for sunshine and temperatures in the mid 40s.
