Yeah, I'd say he'll be gone shortly after his first yearlings sell. Unless they happen to all be stunners.

Winless in 10 starts and by Bodemeister who's been exported. Besides looks why would anyone breed to him? Southern Phantom is a perfect horse to geld and make a show horse. He's flashy enough that he'd turn many heads in the show ring

They only bought him to stand him at stud because of how he looks.

Of course they did. Thing is though - who is he going to appeal to?

He's got nothing to offer TB breeders, nor does he have anything to offer APHA racing breeders. They need speed even more than TB breeders do, and he ain't got that.

Limited appeal even to APHA show breeders. He's not a halter horse, and he's not the 17+ hands that the pleasure horse market dictates now either.

I'm sure he'll attract some mares, question is, for what purpose?

He's not actually retired to stand at Westwin, per FB. He has been retired sound but he is just being let down at Westwin.

If his owners want so assemble a small group of varying mares to send to him privately, I don't see the big issue.

Also, per Westwin's website, Euroears has moved there.

The colored thoroughbred market can't be that big, right? So it will fall to backyard breeders who will then sell the foals at questionable places. So I guess the foals will appeal to the guys buying horses to fill trucks to Mexico and Canada.
That is honestly how I feel about this horse going to stud.

I can tell you it won't be anyone in the legitimate hunter/jumper world. Pinto, palomino, or any kind of cremello horse will always be a pariah at the top level of equestrian sport, and usually for good reason. Horses bred for colour are usually, pardon my french, gross. You get the odd nice pinto hunter pony here and there, but once you get into horses, they usually move like dump trucks, lack scope, and have a couple screws loose. Sorry if I sound a bit savage, but I hate breeding for colour.

Why not get a nice plain bay that is a good mover, bred to compete, and has a good brain?

While I agree that putting color before conformation, agility and mind is a formula for disappointment, I can't help but remember a horse show I went to in Santa Barbara years ago.
We got to the evening show a bit late, and came in when the Puissance round for the top jumpers was underway. I watched in bemusement as a rangy Appaloosa entered the ring, looking very different from the sleek bays and greys before him.
He went over jumps like a gazelle with a jet pack, and his rider reined him in tight turns that cut out a good part of the ground that the other horses had covered. He looked like his second job was as a barrel racer. :shock:
He won clear with time to spare; IIRC, his name was Here Comes Trouble. :P :D

He isn't standing at stud there.

@PhantomSouthern
Just to clarify (as @raypaulick didn’t contact us directly and I think that created some confusion). Southern Phantom is retired 100% sound. He’s hanging out at WestWin Farms enjoying life before the 2021 breeding season. We have yet to announce where he will stand.

@PhantomSouthern
We’ve had interest from all genres of mares, so we’re exploring all options beyond racing. We know he’s in the best hands at
@westwinfarms and will make decisions about what’s next as we evaluate where he’ll generate the most interest.

It’s not where he’s standing at stud that’s an issue. It’s the fact that he’s standing at stud.

As it should be. This is the result of Winstar’s business model. They have to take the rough with the smooth.

What took them so long?

Anyway, I hope they can get him back. Would love to see him get a nice book upon his return.

If your sources have the Turkish speaking Spanish, I might look for different sources.😉
