Wow! I don't know the difference between a paint and a pinto, but whatever color Navajo is considered to be, he is remarkable.

I *think* it's like palomino- a color that some breeds can have in a color "family" (palomino, cremello, etc) while also being a breed.

Paint is a breed (APHA).

Pinto is a horse with a white pattern, of any breed.

The colt above would be classed pinto (he's frame overo), but TBs can also be registered with APHA if they have qualifying markings. So, were he double registered, then he'd be a paint (just to be confusing ;-) )

Navajo is both frame overo and whatever white mutation Moonlark is. Frame doesn't have the tall socks and big blaze that Moonlark has. He may also have some kind of sabino roaning through his dam.

When I was a kid (too long ago :P ), I was taught that a pinto was a combo of just two colors - white & brown or white & black...and that a paint was tri-colored - white, brown & black.
Having a Paint registry that accepts both color variations (as well as any number of breeds) kind of changes things, I guess.

That's the terminology I learned too, so we must be about the same age!

Moonlark has an untestable white pattern, likely via Gone West. There have been a number of Gone West descendents with strong white patterns.

There is no sabino (sb1) in TBs. Looks like another untested W gene in that dam side for sure. Given the breeder, I'm surprised they've nottested, mapped and named that white pattern line.

That’s a striking look. A jibbah forehead? Or maybe a variant of Lexington’s “moose head”?

Very striking. And a granddaughter of Irish Oaks winner Lailani to boot. But I wonder where the loud markings come from?
