I also wonder why anyone would try to sell a yearling with such a scar in this day and age of hyper-perfectionism.

Maybe because finally someone gets that a scar or skin blemish has zero to do with a horses ability to run well. As someone else posted, look at zenyatta

I would guess a fence was involved and he impaled himself badly.

For what it is, I did actually ask about him on the Timber Town FB page when they posted they video because if it was a scar.. man, what a story he must have. They said it IS a birthmark - where the cells didn’t quite close up right in the womb. He came out of the mare like this.

Y'all, it's definitely not a wound and yes he was for sure born with it. Literally as soon as the placenta was pulled back, voila. To put it simply, the skin cells on that area just didn't migrate fully while he was in utero. It's just a cosmetic mark.

It looks like it effects the muscle as well though? I mean the line continues past where the "birthmark" is

Its weird looking... there is like a perfect circle indentation too. My mom said it looked burnt when I showed her earlier today.

If you ignore the mark, he's actually pretty well put together, IMHO. Whoever can look past it may get a great deal on a nicely-bred colt.

Does Tiznow always get a ton of super low priced yearlings? I have never paid attention to his sales results but I saw he had 7 that were under between 2 and 8k, and 4 more under 20k.

This sale is a lot rougher than normal years, there are just certain stallions that rarely sire low priced yearlings that actually sell but most of the big stud fee stallions have this year.

He is currently a rose grey with Tetrarch spots and he looks like he might be on the large side. I don't see any obvious issues...

I am glad to see someone brought this up. Makes me concerned how many will end in kill pens, and makes me concerned how many broodmares will be dumped to kill pens, as well.

Man, having watched a bit the last few days, if this is where they are at halfway through the sale, no wonder half the latter books are already OUTs. I would expect some sharp declines in stud fees as well as a lot of deals this Spring.

He circles both his feet inward rather markedly. On the right front, that motion seems to cause a hard foot-fall, not a limp, but almost fools the eye into seeing a slight limp. The circling motion is more pronounced in his right front, which might explain the hard foot-fall appearance. Also, his shoulder is more upright than the ideal while his hip angle is more correct.

Thanks for sharing your observations. I didn't go back to watch it again, but isn't this similar to the Japanese filly on the other thread? I noticed the shoulder as well.

After looking over the sell prices today, I would love for someone in the industry to be independent enough to not just throw out the normal gross, average, median numbers, but to actually go through the entire sale one by one and determine what percentage of yearlings made a profit for their breeder, what percentage broke even, and what percentages lost some money, moderate amount of money, and a metric FT of money. I honestly don't know how stud fees can't help but plummet this upcoming year. Since the industry completely embraced the idea of the commercial breeder, they are going to have to start playing by normal economic rules, especially with fewer and fewer buyers out there.
