CAL FRAGRANCE was second last turning / widest runner in the straight, ran home quite well.

It was a 1200m Newcomers 2-yr-old race at Hakodate, won by KAISER NOVA (Maurice x Stellar Lead [Special Week]), Maurice's first winner in Japan.

The Galileo-Hveger 2017 model, Nobel Prize, won the Ballysax S (G3) at Dundalk today.

I think Monarch of Egypt was their Derby hopeful from the Ballysax, and he could only manage a fifth-place finish.

Galileos don’t do dirt, so I’d be surprised if they took the KD route with Nobel Prize. But it’s Coolmore, so anything is possible.

The fact that Monarch of Egypt had originally been given entries in the 7f Prix Jean Prat and the 6f July Cup, both over turf last weekend, then was rerouted to the Ballysax over 1 5/16 miles on synthetic... it just seemed like a last ditch effort to see if he had any chance to be a Derby/dirt horse, which he isnt.

I’d look for him to hit the board next time runs over turf at 7f or less. He has been screaming for a cutback in distance with a semblance of a clean run. His 3 y/o debut over a mile in the Irish 2,000 Guineas was just one big traffic jam, and he ran really well in the 7f Jersey at Ascot, finishing 2nd.

In reality, he just doesnt seem to have the turn of foot needed to win on turf at the top level in Europe at any distance. One of the reasons he always seems to be stuck in traffic is that he is not fast enough to get through a hole before it closes. Last year, if he had been a top tier horse, he should have beaten Siskin in the Phoenix because the latter had the worst of the track that day.

Moving Light - c. 2017 Night of Thunder X North East Bay, by Prospect Bay (half to Dubai World Cup winner Prince Bishop) made a nice debut at Leicester today, despite some greenness. Owned by Godolphin, trained by Saeed Bin Suroor, he was an €180,000 purchase at Tattersalls Ireland September 2018.
