Considering Square Eddie was pretty much a private stallion who covered the same 25 Reddam mares every year, he really was a good stallion. The Reddams did a great job getting him off the ground as a regional stallion, and it's too bad that he has been pensioned, hopefully he has a long and happy retirement.Mylute wrote: ↑Fri May 01, 2020 7:19 pm Square Eddie has been pensioned at the age of 14. Square Eddie retires from stud duty with 215 foals, 17 stakes winners and current total earnings of over $15 million.
I wonder what prompted this. Hope he's doing OK.

They did do a really good job supporting him but I think they also priced him out of the market for most California breeders. If you have $25,000 to spend on a stud fee you probably go to Kentucky instead.Northport wrote: ↑Fri May 01, 2020 10:24 pmConsidering Square Eddie was pretty much a private stallion who covered the same 25 Reddam mares every year, he really was a good stallion. Knowing this, you really gotta wonder how much more successful he would've been if he had been priced reasonably.

If the fertility issues rumours are true, I wonder if they had been apparent enough over the years that the Reddams weren't concerned about a small book size and overpriced him on the off chance that someone came along that was willing to shell out $25,000 for a cover.... idk.
But yeah, on the face of it, $25,000 is a little bit pie-in-the-sky for a California based stallion.

I didn't like how they handled Square Eddie though, I remembered they brought him back once, I forgot it was twice and perhaps that's why I've never rooted for Reddam horses because I really liked him when he was racing. He "retired" to stud in 2010, covered 34 mares, went back into training, raced 3 times at the beginning of 2011 through March 5, 2011, went back to the farm covered 40 mares, went back into training, and raced again that fall/winter. I don't like stallions being brought back after being retired, pick what you want him to do and stick with it. Its not fair to the horse to ask him to do 2 different jobs where his behavior has to be completely different. Once was bad enough, but to have him do it twice, blah. I'm happy he was a successful stallion and that they didn't overbreed him. So perhaps his high stud fee was a good thing.

Charlatan's breeding rights have been bought by Hill n Dale. They don't say he retires for 2021 but that's what my money is on.

They done did it. Jockey Club officially limiting book size to 140 mares for any stallion born in 2020 or later
https://www.paulickreport.com/news/bloo ... 140-mares/
Spendthrift and Coolmore are SHAKING right now
I'm kind of waiting to see someone come out and say something about how this goes against free market principles that is the fabric of North American (mostly American) capitalism.
Though... obviously the future high end stallions will be more expensive, but, at the same time, maybe fees will go up across the board. Some farms' bread and butter (Spendthrift comes to mind) is getting huge books for their young stallions, most of whom are priced at $10,000 and lower. Knowing this, each covering just got a lot more valuable... for their future stallions.
Either way, I think it's a good mandate, and am interested to see how it pans out in the next 5-10 years. This sport seems like it can't help but sewer itself in North America, so it's nice to see at least one of the governing bodies take proactive steps to look after welfare of the stallions and the betterment of the breed as a whole.

I think the cap is a good thing, but I can’t help but think it’s going to make things much tougher for small breeders like myself. I usually do a handful of foal shares a year with my best mares for stallions that I definitely wouldn’t be able to afford. I really doubt any farm will be doing many foal shares for any decent stallions with the limited book now. I do think it will be good for the breed though, not to mention the health of the stallions.

I read the whole article, honest... but I'm wondering how this would affect shuttling? It reads/sounds like 140 is the limit for covers in the USA/Canada etc, but then could a stallion shuttle and cover more mares outside of that geographic boundary??

It wont affect shuttling at all. The Jockey Club only has jurisdiction in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico.lurkey mclurker wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2020 2:17 pm I read the whole article, honest... but I'm wondering how this would affect shuttling? I'm going to look at this from all sides. I like that the Jockey Club is limiting books, no stallion needs to be covering over 140 mares. I like that other stallions will get to see more mares. It will make farms be more selective in their process of booking mares.Northport wrote: ↑Thu May 07, 2020 1:21 pm They done did it. However, I see how certain farms don't want this because it limits their capacity to buy stallions. It pretty much means they either can't buy a stallion, HAVE to secure a shuttle deal for the stallion before purchasing him or set his stud fee higher. It could very well lead to more stallions being exported because farms outside the US can offer more because the stallion can have an unlimited book in their country. I also imagine programs like Spendthrift's Share the Upside will end.
As for breeders, if they think their mare is worth a 10k stud fee, that is what they are going to go to. They aren't going to send a mare they wanted to breed for 10k to a higher stud fee. So if the farms raise the stud fees for a stallion that would have stood for 10k to 20k, it doesn't mean he'll get mares. The breeders aren't going to absorb the stud fee.

Bolt D’Oro is not shuttling to Australia this year. I’m glad they’re giving him a break.

And it'll never even effect those 43 as they'll always be exempt from the rule.
I think in future it will make for a more interesting 1st/2nd/3rd crop sire list as it should level the playing field a bit.
With the more limited book, instead of young stallions covering 240+ mares, 100+ of those mares will move on to their 2nd or 3rd choice. Hopefully that will improve the books of some 2nd level stallions and make for move even crop numbers when looking at new stallion success, vs just sheer numbers often winning sire titles for money earned.
