@ Martin Stevens / Vivienne Murtagh

Filly by Vadamos out of Liberty Counsel (Leading Counsel). The dam won the 2013 Irish Grand National Steeplechase at 50-1 and is apparently not a full thoroughbred?

Her dam's pedigree is unknown on every site I've looked at.

Horses that aren't purebred Thoroughbreds are allowed to compete in National Hunt races. A large portion of French bred jumps horses (imo most of the top jumps horses of the modern era are French bred) are registered as AQPS ("Autre Que Pur-Sang"), translated as "Other than Thoroughbred/Pure Blood". Usually that means that there is Selle Francais/Warmblood blood or Arabian blood further down the line.

Knowing this, I was kind of surprised to see that Liberty Counsel was bred in Ireland.

That's what I find strange about Liberty Counsel. I know that AQPS horses are allowed to compete in most jump races and I know that AQPS horses and breeding is actually popular...in France and eastern Europe. Also, the only member of Liberty Counsel's female family that is known or registered is her mom. Her mom's parents, grandparents, etc. aren't known and are listed as being "unregistered." I can't recall ever encountering an AA or AQPS horse in France Sire's stallion register (which displays them alongside pure thoroughbreds), or in entries with parents that are unknown/unregistered. Maybe I just haven't looked hard enough.

And so, could one - given enough spare cash - dig out the parentage via DNA testing? Would it even be economically worth it? If momma can reproduce herself, that in itself ought to make her offspring highly desirable.

Liberty Counsel was allowed to race in National Hunt, her foals will be too. So there really isn't a point, it wont change the value of anything. I *did* find a story about her dam and while it was pretty short, its interesting how Liberty Counsel even came to be. It's also the reason her dam's breeding isn't known.

My Free Mantel was actually a nurse mare who was brought to Clongiffen Stud to raise a thoroughbred foal whose dam had died. The stud owner liked her so much he allowed her to be covered by Leading Counsel. Her owner decided he didn't want her any longer so Winston Honnner acquired her and registered her as a non-thoroughbred so her foals could race. She then had Liberty Counsel but unfortunately died from foaling complications producing her next foal, Rohans Pride.

Alpine Sky's 2020 foal died. No details, but he had been dealing with intestinal issues. 2020 has been a terrible year.

On the better news side, New Money Honey's people posted on Twitter that she is continuing to recover well (yesterday was her 6th birthday).

The Japanese have made some very savvy stallion/broodmare buys over the years, and IMHO acquiring Declaration of War is one of their smartest.
Wasn't he standing at a Coolmore farm? I wonder if the Blue Crew has a teeny bit of Seller's Remorse? :?:

Is DoW sold or on lease? I’m a huge fan of what he has done so far, so I hope he’s just leased!
