Part is true, part isn't. The only controversy I remember at the time was that he wasn't pensioned at Lane's End but perhaps that was the arrangement his owner had made and when he couldn't handle the crowds at the KY Horse Park he was sent to Virginia. He went directly from Lane's End to the Kentucky Horse Park and then to Blue Ridge.FlyToTheStars wrote: ↑Wed Apr 15, 2020 10:50 pm Is this even true? Saw this when looking up on Pleasnt Colony
Following his owner's death in 1997, Pleasant Colony was sent to Lane's End Farm in Versailles, Kentucky. Somehow in 2000 he was found in horrible conditions, very underweight and was brought to the KY Horse Park where he was given proper care. In 2000, he was pensioned and sent to Blue Ridge Farm in Upperville, Virginia, where he died in 2002 at age 24.

Another issue with Pleasant Colony was he could not retract his penis and the KY Horse Park did not think it was appropriate for him to be on display to the public with that condition. I believe he also was showing the beginnings of this problem while still at Lane’s End Farm.

That is a tremendous loss for Godolphin and the Maktoum family. Does anyone know/remember what health issues he had? He'd been standing privately since 2016 and covered small books that were made up exclusively of Maktoum family mares.ThreeMustangs wrote: ↑Thu Apr 16, 2020 10:17 am Very sad to post that Shamardal is gone.

Although Shamardal is still only 17 years old in 2019, his career has unfortunately been compromised by physical issues over the last few years. Having covered 156 mares in 2014 and 129 in 2015, he hasn’t been able to cope with so many mares in subsequent years, when his fee has been listed as private. While he covered 108 mares in 2016 for a crop of 81 2-year-olds in 2019, he was restricted to 65 mares in 2017 and 63 in 2018 and will be subject to similar restraint during the current season.

I kind of answered my own question, maybe. It looks like he struggled with Wobblers early in life, I wonder if that ever came back later in life. It could certainly make it dangerous for him to perform live covers.Northport wrote: ↑Thu Apr 16, 2020 10:34 amThat is a tremendous loss for Godolphin and the Maktoum family. My hope is that if he was displaying signs of wobblers they wouldn't have bred him because it is a genetic condition but I know breeders still breed horses with it, Inside Information produced quite a few foals with wobblers. Managed properly a horse can lead a pretty normal, but being a breeding stallion just seems insanely dangerous to the horse and everyone around him.Northport wrote: ↑Thu Apr 16, 2020 6:37 pmI kind of answered my own question, maybe. However he did miss part of at least two breeding seasons, the 2009 SH breeding season because of an injury to his withers, which means he probably fell. Then he fell for sure in 2010 while covering in Australia, which resulted in them doing exploratory surgery and him not shuttling anymore.

Oh interesting, I never knew that he fell. What bad luck for a horse who already had (though seemingly resolved) spinal issues. Just saw this video here and the stud manager at Darley Ireland said that he was injured a couple years back and if affected his ability to cover too many mares, so that must be the withers injury and/or a fall.Flanders wrote: ↑Thu Apr 16, 2020 8:31 pmMy hope is that if he was displaying signs of wobblers they wouldn't have bred him because it is a genetic condition but I know breeders still breed horses with it, Inside Information produced quite a few foals with wobblers. The latest tweet from the JS Company (Arrow Stud). They are delighted that their followers have grown so much since they acquired a certain celebrity stallion.

I can't find an article about it now, but I think I read a long time ago that Shamardal's wobbling was a result of a disease he got as a foal and not due to genetics.Flanders wrote: ↑Thu Apr 16, 2020 8:31 pmMy hope is that if he was displaying signs of wobblers they wouldn't have bred him because it is a genetic condition but I know breeders still breed horses with it, Inside Information produced quite a few foals with wobblers. Breeders are grabbing them younger and younger, it seems.
The way things are going, someone's going to send some blue-blooded, multi-million-dollar yearling to the shed for his two-year-old season.

Conversely, D'Argento is a six year old (in the Northern Hemisphere) who made 14 starts over several years. He is also very very pretty.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 21, 2020 4:55 pm Breeders are grabbing them younger and younger, it seems.

Seriously, in reading the article, one gets the strong impression they were trying to retire him early so people wouldn't find out he was an average at best racehorse,BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 21, 2020 4:55 pm Breeders are grabbing them younger and younger, it seems.

Though that article makes it seem Tassort is 2, he'll be 4 when he goes to stud. He was born in 2016 and hasn't raced since February 2019, he got injured before the Golden Slipper and while they tried to get him back to the races, I'm fairly certain he injured himself again recently.

^this. While I find the retiring of perfectly sound (Mehmas and The Last Lion) or non severely injured 2 year olds to stud to be, frankly, infuriating, it doesn't seem to be the case here. From what I read, Tassort was a worthy favourite for the Golden Slipper, got injured, was turned out for a bit, and just couldn't stay sound enough to race again, and was retired as a four year old. Would I send a mare to him? No. But, he was an ultra impressive maiden winner, out of a mare that has produced G1 winner and sire Astern and 3x G1 winner Ailzee. For approximately $7,000 USD, I can see why some would be interested.Flanders wrote: ↑Tue Apr 21, 2020 8:10 pm Though that article makes it seem Tassort is 2, he'll be 4 when he goes to stud.
