Lontano is registered dark bay/brown but sure looks black to me.

Is he by Lonhro? I know that great black Aussie stallion stood here for at least one season, and Lontano sure has his looks.

I thought that too but he isn't. He is by Street Boss - Woodland Park, by Bernardini. 2nd dam is MG3SW Foreset Heiress, who is a full sister to G1SW Wildcat Heir.BaroqueAgain1 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 15, 2020 12:57 am Is he by Lonhro? Thank you for that picture, CQ!
He looked Jet Black to me and we are having issues with our internet right now so I couldn't look him up to see if he was by Lonhro or not (I assumed that he was due to the name) so i was actually kind of shocked to see that he wasn't! This thread is actually what made me consider re-signing up to the board simply so that I could contribute to it when I encountered black horses as I explore various horses. I think this guy is a stunner!

He is registered Dark Brown, but is definitely black. It takes a ton of blaring sun to bleach any hair to brown tips, and he doesn't have brown nose hair at all.
Years later for a possible answer, but I think that horse at Marquis Downs may have been "Fourth of Gold" -- Touch Gold x Turkey n' the Straw--Farma Way. His last race was 2011 at Marquis Downs. Wasn't fast there, or several years prior, but showed some early promise before a fairly serious training injury. Came in ahead of Bernardini once in his youth. Now he's plenty fast for me in his retirement. In an ideal world, he would have been retired earlier, I think.Katewerk wrote: ↑Mon Mar 24, 2014 1:49 amI did try, but came up empty, sorry.Cigar wrote:Did you ever find the name?Katewerk wrote:A black was racing at Marquis Downs about 3 years ago, I think owned by a very small time owner. Fourth of Gold is beautiful! Glad he's enjoying retirement.

PQ says black, Equibase says dark bay/brown. In the pics on Google he looks very black, but the pictures are also old.

If he wasn't black, he was as dark bay as you could possibly get. His son Cobra King was the same color.
Edit to say:
I grabbed a 97 stallion directory and Farma Way's photo is in it. He is very dark but he isn't black. I always thought he was black though. Honestly... I don't know.. I feel like some horses can look dark bay in certain lights and black in others.
Here is a different photo of him:

I saw Farma Way race, and he sure looked black to me. Wasn’t his sire Marfa mean as a snake?
I thought Social Paranoia, who won the Appleton (G3) Saturday, looked black. If not, he’s awfully close to it.

I'm not sure that's the same horse -- I'm nearly certain this was was a registered black, and remember that his young owner/trainer dressed him up in purple leg wraps. He was obviously very proud of his charge.
But, now I'm curious again. (But I'm not ruling out that you're correct, either. It's been a few years!)

Here's Glajou (Network x Toscane, by Shaanmer). He's registered, you guessed it, bay. What is the point of these coat cuts again?

He's by Network, so he races over jumps, not on the flat. Most jumps horses have trace clips like that, as they race throughout the winter. With the trace clip, they sweat less in key spots like between and behind their front legs and on their necks, while their backs can stay warm and lessen chances of tying up. They can be cooled out quicker in the cold weather and their legs stay plenty warm when they're wearing coolers/rugs/blankets.Mylute wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2020 9:58 pm Here's Glajou (Network x Toscane, by Shaanmer). Mensageiro Alado (Ghadeer x Key to the Edge, by Sharpen Up) is considered to be one of the best Brazilian sprinters in his day, if not all time. He is registered black, and looks to be so in this photo. Mensageiro Alado recently passed away at 29 (or 28 in the Southern Hemisphere). His Portuguese name translates to "Winged Messenger", which is another name for angel. I think he looks kinda pony-ish in this photo.

Ultimate Mystery might not be a talented racehorse, but he sure is beautiful.
