I wouldn't breed her this year, but if she were mine and recovered really well, I'd breed her again in the future. Now we don't know exactly what happened that caused them to go to c section, so that could be something that would preclude her from being bred again.
I was always wondering about that so I’m glad to hear it! My boss thinks otherwise, but I know everyone has differing opinions
I mean, in humans they highly suggest not (intentionally) getting pregnant for 18 months after a c-section. I would assume it is just as invasive in a mare. The uterus is scarred and future pregnancy can 1) difficult to get pregnant to start with 2) puts pressure on that scar tissue within the uterus as the pregnancy advances.

Again, I'm no equine vet but I imagine a mare uterus is just as susceptible. I think if I had such a mare, I'd probably skip a year to be safe assuming no other underlying issues.

One of our mares needed a c-section 3 years ago. We left her for that year and the tried again the next year, as our vets said there was no reason not to breed from her again. We never managed to get her back in foal though, but found a lovely home for her as a riding horse. I don't know if the surgery had anything to do with her not getting in foal again, as she was always a bit tricky.

There is an update on New Money Honey and her filly on the Foal Patrol site. Both are doing well right now. Mom is off IV fluids, and the baby is off supplemental oxygen. Cautious optimism continues.

e5 shared a a short video of MMH's filly frolicking outside. She still has a "bandage" around her snout and IV ports on her neck.

She looked a bit shaky but that might just be here shivering from the chilly morning air.

Thanks for news about the video. I went over to Foal Patrol to watch it. The filly is adorable, but I wondered if she was turned out without her mom. Wish they had either shown the mare or explained more about the foal's turnout. If the foal was separated from her mom even for a short while, would that have stressed both the filly and mom?

Maybe NMH was in the vicinity of the filly, jut not in the camera shot, or they let the filly have an outside leg stretcher while mom got a checkup nearby.

Someone asked on social media and e5 responded that the mare was close by being hand-grazed. They weren't separated; NMH just wasn't shown in the short video.

Thanks for sharing that info. Good to know NMH is grazing and the filly was happy in her first turnout. I hope they are both out of the woods and on the mend. Good news for a change. (Means I can go back and watch it again without worry. :D )

This barn has some of the worst lighting and it doesn’t help that the foal is dark bay. This is a Mendelssohn colt out of Switched Up. Mare is a half sister to MGR1 winner Switch.
