I am relieved. Blessings for a safe delivery for both mare and foal.
I'm glad. She looked SO uncomfortable last night and you could tell that she was in the early stages of labor, but couldn't seem to get it perfect. Stretching, rolling, extending, pawing..she did it all. Definitely thinking of her. (I've stayed up two nights watching her--now that my sleep schedule is all screwed up, not sure what I am going to do tonight! LOL!)

He is just such a sweetheart! All he wants is his carrots, cuddles and rolling in the mud

His first crop are now 2 years old, so it'll be exciting to seem them running this year! It's quite special, because we already bred and raced Vanishing Cupid ourselves and now it's his babies' turn.

I felt so bad for NMH, she would sometimes walk up to the stall door and look out into the corridor as if begging someone to get that foal out of her. I hope the birth goes smoothly for her in the end and the foal is healthy.

Cautiously optimistic prognosis for NMH and her filly following a C-section.

I know that c-sections for horses are a nearly last resort, and far more serious than for humans. I hope she recovers completely, but I do wonder how this will impact her future as a broodmare, even if she does heal well. :?

Not sure if everyone thinks this, but my boss said you have to breed the mare every other year because it takes so much out of them and that after they have a c section, they can’t birth naturally anymore. Like I said, don’t know if it’s all true. Also there’s only so many c sections a mare can withstand before you need to pension her for good.

Gah. I had a bad feeling but didn't want to say anything. :((((( All the jingles for them both.

I know I'm not a breeder or expert, but if she was my mare she'd be done. Let her go be someone's riding horse, if she can, or let her babysit the young'uns. Why take that risk?

Honestly, as long as they both live, who cares if she never gives birth again. She made 1.5 million dollars. That seems plenty to keep her in the lap of safety and bliss to her natural end of life.

I am with you. She did win 1.5 million. It is not like she was sluggard in stall.

One of the earlier Foul Patrols mom died shortly after giving birth and she kind of behaved the same way NMH was behaving the last 48/hours. I am relieved they did the C section.

On the bright side, her kiddo is a filly that can carry on NMH's legacy if she cannot anymore (provided the filly survives and can produce as an adult).

Mares can have foals naturally after having a c section prior. The risks are slightly higher, but not overly so, assuming she recovers well. I wouldn't breed her this year, but if she were mine and recovered really well, I'd breed her again in the future. Now we don't know exactly what happened that caused them to go to c section, so that could be something that would preclude her from being bred again.

Glad to hear that NMH and her foal are doing well. Two straight nights i watched her! Good thing I am retired and didn't have to go to work
As for what went wrong, I'm far from a breeding expert but on that last night, on certain areas of the stall where she was standing, I could see a suspicious bulging area (actually, it look like two, just misshapen) in her flank area (this was after her lying down and attempting to roll) that made me suspect that the foal wasn't quite positioned properly. I'm not a breeding/foal expert though, so maybe it was completely unrelated to that. I might have a slight amount of general horse knowledge, but definitely not when it comes to pregnant mares!

I was always wondering about that so I’m glad to hear it! My boss thinks otherwise, but I know everyone has differing opinions
