I have to say, I am not agreeing with this new media trend of highlighting the new foals on the grounds. Honestly, I don't think mares within 1 month ( or really 2 months) of their due date should be allowed to be catalogued at the sales. It is just not good husbandry to put a mare in late pregnancy or a newborn foal through that kind of stress.

Not saying its a good idea. But its definitely not new. Anytime a mare has foaled at the sale the media always takes tons of pictures. The one that really sticks out to me is 10 years ago, Desert Stormer foaled at the Keeneland January sale maybe the day before she was supposed to go through the ring. There was tons of pictures and the handlers carried the colt to the ring when they sold. He was named Bornatthetrack. But I know there has been more before that and after that. He was just easy to remember because of his dam and his name. Some consignors/owners wont send a mare through that is close to her foaling date.

Yeah, apparently a California Chrome filly was born at FT and entered the ring before she has had a chance to enter a pasture, and all the pics are celebrating it as though it is some great thing. I am happy that she seemed to be born with no complications, but seriously, the mare's last cover date was March 1st and so the owners and consignors knew she would be foaling right around the sale. And they were a RNA so they put the mare and foal through a lot of extra stress for no reason at all.

The auction house screen can play videos on it.

If they wanted to go ahead and sell, or gauge interest at least, they could've taken a 30 second video of the mare and foal and a couple nice pictures and shown up on the screen.

And they don't all make it.

Pics might be celebrating it, but social media is slamming the decision to put that new mom and newborn into the sales ring. They even had the mare doing walks with her baby forced to trot alongside. And when I say forced, I mean just that.
