Significant loss to the breed, imo. We're thankful to have two 2-yo EM fillies this year.

Gutted by his loss. I was so happy he had returned to the US.

How very sad that the beautiful Empire Maker is gone. But he outlived many in his lineage. Dr. Fager, Fappiano, Unbridled, Pioneerof the Nile, Royal Delta , etc., all died fairly young. Rest In Peace you big, beautiful boy. 😢

That's very sad news. :(
I saw his Belmont in person.
He really had a commanding air as he came back to the winner's circle.
May he rest in peace.

19 is still fairly young. But I was just thinking about that. It should be somewhat concerning.
Here's to hoping his PotN grandsons prove their mettle at stud.
A filly named Ruffian...

Eine Stute namens Danedream...

Une pouliche se nommant Trêve...

And a Queen named Beholder

They almost all died from different things. Dr. Fager to colic, Fappiano to a broken leg, Unbridled to post surgery complications for removal of a tumor like mass in his intestines(he developed adhesions, which caused severe colic) , Pioneerof the Nile to a heart attack, Royal Delta to foaling complications. If anything it shows just how fragile horses are.

That line has been pretty unlucky.

My other thought was that it was strange they didn't disclose what the disease was.

I think the writer of the articles chose not to say. It believe it was easier to say rare autoimmune disease than try to explain it.
The one article said it was pernicious sickness with autoimmune disorder, which I'd never heard of before. Its anemia that is caused by b12 deficiency. The deficiency is caused by the immune system attacking the stomach lining that produces the protein needed to absorb b12 and/or the lining that produces b12.

Interesting. The farm I work at has a daughter of his with an autoimmune disorder as well. She was battling low blood platelet levels and it took her months to get near normal levels again. Wonder if it’s hereditary

Everything I read about the disease was on a human webpage, not an equine. But that page said there is a genetic version, so its very possible.

Edit to add: Here is the article that says it was pernicious sickness, while the other articles said it was a rare immune disorder.

Interesting read, thank you Flanders for linking it. Thankfully the mare seems to be doing well.

Decarchy, half-brother to Empire Maker, battled an autoimmune disorder for years before having to be put down at age 20.

I know he was eventually put down for laminitis. Truly, Toussaud as good a broodmare as she was with regards to track performance, is not one that should be used as a Rasmussen Factor candidate.

i read that what EM had isn't hereditary so i'm not sure why she shouldn't be. it's possible i don't understand the RF very well (isn't it just a mare showing up more than once in the first 5 generations?). can you (or anyone else) explain why she's not a good candidate? ty in advance :)

RF is a mare in a pedigree twice but it has to be through the sire and dam, and through different offspring of the mare. Danehill and Stevie Wonderboy are examples.
