Isn't Emerald Equine the farm started by one of the stallion managers or a former manager of Taylor Made? I have a vague memory of his announcing it on twitter.

I think it has to do with a flaxen gene?
That is correct.

From what I've seen the flaxen gene tends to be carried by chestnuts the most, although probably the most "recognized" source of flaxen in the U.S. is Include, a carrier, who is bay with a little bit of blonde in his tail.

Filly Wanderwell (New Approach x Ama, by Storm Cat) kind of looks like a mini Talismanic, I think. Second dam is Miesque. She's registered as...bay.

The mechanism of flaxen is not known yet. It's not a gene you can breed for.

Gulastra plume (grey tails in adults) is not related.

Wanderwell is a cute name, and I certainly love a lot of white against a dark base coat.

But then you add in the fact that she's a granddaughter of Miesque and, well, how could I not love her?

Whoa... that's a blast from the past. I remember reading/giggling over the Flugly blog back in college.

I've mentioned this before in the black thoroughbreds thread but from what I've seen researching black horses Europe seems to want to register everything that isn't chestnut as bay. No dark bay/brown or even brown, absolutely no black.

Yes I've noticed that too. That filly sure looks black from that one picture. She is gorgeous.

There definitely aren't many horses registered as black in Europe. With the bay thing it depends on the country a bit, in UK/Ireland there sometimes register them as brown, but definitely not all. In France brown isn't an option, I think. They only seem to have bay(bai), chestnut(alezan), grey(gris) and black(noir). We have one mare that is very much brown, but in France is listed as black and another one that is brown/almost black is listed as bay.

The problem with bay/brown is also that the horses change colour a lot. We had a foal this year that was definitely a bay at first and I think is also registered as such, but he has gotten a lot darker and would probably be considered brown now rather than bay.

1st foal shed is always traditionally the darkest, and is not indicitive of adult shade :-) That presents one of the issues in registering foals..... they're born with foal buff/camo, and shed out darker than normal initially.
