He never stood at stud. So either he was given as a riding horse prospect or he passed away before he covered mares.

Water Spirit (Jackson x Undine, by Western Winter) won at Kenilworth Racecourse in South Africa. She's registered as just "bay" but I think she should probably be registered black/brown. Both parents are registered bays, but Jackson looks dkb/br.

And a grandson of BC Juvenile Fillies winner Folklore to boot!

Also concur that Water Spirit is definitely more black/brown than bay. :?

I've noticed that countries like South Africa don't have readily open-to-the-public pedigree databases like JBIS so I had to dig to find her registered color. The only site that listed one was Punters (IIRC) which said bay.

And Jackson is listed as a bay everywhere, which I also don't agree with. How do you look at Water Spirit and Jackson and say "yes they look the same color as Anerican Pharoah" ?

While on-topic, is this just an isolated case or does Europe have a tendency to register every horse who isn't gray or chestnut as "bay"?
https://www.goffs.com/sales-results/sal ... -sale-2019

Because other than one registered as black (lot 467), and the chestnuts and grays, every horse is bay. The horse photographed in this article from this lot (lot 88) is registered bay, but is obviously black/brown or dark bay.

It's possible that that this Caravaggio colt will end up grey.
When I first saw Caravaggio (2yo at Ascot, maybe?), he looked as black as midnight. The Scat Daddy colt eventually started showing those soft bits of grey in his tail and on his head, so he will probably end up as pale as his dam sire, Holy Bull. :P

Here's G3 winner Flop Shot (New Approach x Dancequest, by Dansili) who is another case of a horse who could classify as black/brown or just black being registered as bay.
EDIT: He's been sold to Peter Brant, aka White Birch Farm in the US and is registered "black" with Equibase.

Reminds me of Better Talk Now from the mid-2000s. He was registered as bay though he looked solid black. His nickname was even "Blackie".

Here's Want of a Nail (Kapgarde x Westonne, by Mansonnien), named for the proverb, who is registered black/brown.

From what I understand the JC still refuses to register a horse as black without proof it is indeed black. Before that required all sorts of photos and vet statements but now you only have to have them color tested. Of course that costs money and most racehorse breeders won't spend that. They don't care what color they are listed as so most will be dark bay or brown. I would think a black offspring of two black horses (reg.) would not require a test as you can only produce black or chestnut (if both parents carry an "e" (vs. E) from two blacks. Black is very prone to fading so you have to look at the skin of the muzzle and eye area, a black horse will usually still have black skin around the muzzle at least even if the rest of him has faded to tan. Most brown/bay horses will have tan/reddish areas around the nose.

Interesting.

I wonder if that is also required for official registry as "black/brown."

Here's an interesting guy. Nao Da Mais (T.H. Approval x Espetacular, by Pitu du Guanabara) just won the G1 Gran Premio International Carlos Pellegrini in Argentina, a WAYI race for the BC, which he is now aimed toward.

His dad is gray, his mom bay, and his grandpa is gray too. He himself is registered bay, but looks black.

Here's Team Valor's Emoji (Soldier Hollow x Exotic Rose, by Manduro). This German-bred filly won her debut by 14 lengths over colts and fillies.
