But we all know we'd do anything to have Mandy Pope's broodmare band, whether or not they produce the next great star.

Wasn't there an article posted on this very forum a while back that showed that the notion great race mares don't produce well is essentially a myth?
The article showed the statistics confirmed that GSW mares were more likely to produce blacktype earnings.
I think the issue is people have unrealistic expectations about horses reproducing or outproducing themselves when as HB says, it's essentially a genetic lottery, even with careful breeding, thoughtful pairings and all that. Just that having a better mare increases the stastistic outcome. It doesn't guarantee it.
We just amplify the failure of those mares because we pay more attention to them is all. No one is out there following the broodmare career of Battlefield Angel.
For sure I'd like to have Mandy Pope's broodmare band. Just nowhere at the price she has paid for them. Those prices are indeed collector's prices, not sound investment or breeding prices.

Why not leave her in the sale with a ridiculously high reserve?mosieposie12 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 02, 2019 9:37 am Just posted on Twitter by Bloom Racing, They are going to withdraw Midnight Bisou and race her another year

I would guess they want to give her some well-deserved time off and not potentially stress her out and make her parade around for buyers for 2-3 days under false pretenses.ThreeMustangs wrote: ↑Sat Nov 02, 2019 11:06 amWhy not leave her in the sale with a ridiculously high reserve?mosieposie12 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 02, 2019 9:37 am Just posted on Twitter by Bloom Racing, They are going to withdraw Midnight Bisou and race her another year

Great for fans; probably disappointing for the big-buck breeders who coveted her.

Midnight Bisou will make a welcome addition to any broodmare band as I'm sure her particular pedigree isn't common, especially among higher-class bands like Coolmore's. Little inbreeding in the first five gens so I imagine she'll make a nice outcross as well.

If she stays with high reserve and doesnt sell, whats are the fees? I know sellers have to pay something if their horse doesnt sell.

Just a reminder for Battle of Midway fans...this is from an October article.
https://www.drf.com/news/two-battle-mid ... g-novemberBut Battle of Midway’s saga, which appeared to be on an upward trajectory, came to a tragic end just three weeks later, when the 5-year-old sustained a fatal injury in a work at Santa Anita. His loss makes his handful of foals all the more intriguing. Battle of Midway’s two representatives in the fall catalogs are a weanling filly at the Fasig-Tipton November sale the evening of Nov. 5, and a colt who is scheduled to sell during Book 2 of the Keeneland November breeding stock sale on Nov. 7.
The filly, already named Battle of Wits, will be the first horse into the ring at Fasig-Tipton. Consigned by Susan M. Forrester, as agent, she is out of the stakes-placed Lemon Drop Kid mare You’re Kidding.
The colt at Keeneland is consigned by James B. Keogh’s Grovensale, as agent. He is out of the unraced Langfuhr mare Delicate Affair, who is from the family of Grade 1 winners Seeking the Gold and Fast Play.
