Maybe? I look at various maiden races and see a lot of runners - not solely AP's - that seem to have speed, based upon brilliant moments or workouts, but lack the drive to win. I don't know how much of the population of "racing failures" are due just to lack of wanna-WIN drive and not ability. "Hey if you want the lead that bad you can have it, I'm cool with the current speed". Or just not liking the way intensely running fast in a race makes them feel, running in late afternoon heat in front of a noisy crowd after having peed away quarts of moisture post-Lasix, compared to running shorter distances in the relative cool of morning while fully hydrated.

And how much of the competitive is naturally that high in our winners sans a jockey urging them on? One thing I've noticed is how often a horse that dumps its jockey DOESN'T zoom to the lead. Unless an outrider grabs them, they're usually running to stay with or in the herd, not to lead it. They suddenly have a 100-pound+ advantage over the rest of the field, you'd think if they wanted to take the lead it'd be a lot easier for them than one of the others. The riderless ones that do go for the lead and stay there, that'd be one I'd say has built-in competitive drive to win :)

This is one of the higher dollar claiming races ($75,000) and as expected most aren't up for a claim. This is her third race. Previous were 1st in a 5-furlong MSW on 17-August, and 2nd in her debut, a 6-furlong MSW 14-July, both at Ellis Park on the dirt

American Legend finished 5th of 12. She ran fourth and fifth throughout, chasing the pace, tried to make a closing bid and failed to back it up with speed.

Egyptian Princess was 6th of 10.

Her new owners bred her to American Pharoah then imported her into Japan. She has yearling and weanling colts by Deep Impact.

Not too bad for American Legend. She certainly got some traffic/big field experience out of it.

Shell Shock was 2nd of 9. She broke well from 8th, managed to miss the jumpout bumparama to her inside, cut in to be 2nd, looks like she might have gotten a bit of bumping around the first turn as others attempted to push forward and she had to be checked a bit, then when allowed charged forward to get her nose in front before being pulled back to 2nd. It looked from my crappy angle on crappy video that she was rather rank and not happy about having to sit a length back in 2nd, didn't want to relax into an efficient smooth stride. She made a solid attempt at catching the winner during the closing chase, but Extravagant Rosie who had led since the started was able to find some more to give and held out until the wire.

A bay colt out of Along hadn't logged a workout since May 31st. I did a brief web search and found him on the For Sale page of the farm he had been at when logging works. Here's the page if anyone wants to look at him: newcastlefarm.com/horses-for-sale/ . This may be outdated information since the other American Pharoah offspring on that page is American Legend, but minus her name - just Yong Musician '17. She is actively in training and racing with a 3-1-1-0 record. I'd think if they were still actively marketing her they'd do it with her registered name.

American Theorem is running in the G1 American Pharoah Stakes this Friday - September 27th. He's the only AP offspring in this event. It's 1-1/16th miles on dirt at Santa Anita.

Eight Rings will also be running. American Theorem has post position 1 and Eight Rings will be starting from 3rd.

Race 8, post time 4:40pm local-time so that's 7:40pm Eastern US.

This race is WAYI for the Breeder's Cup Juvenile. It also gives the winner 10 points for the 2020 Kentucky Derby.

Great effort on Turned Aside 's part. Too bad it was only for second, but he worked his fanny off.

He broke well and went straight to the lead, with Jack and Noah right beside, then right behind him. Jack And Noah was in his debut and really unhappy that his jockey wasn't letting him pass the leader but instead holding him in second about a length back as Turned Aside posted fractions of 22.33 and 45.26. At the top of the stretch, Jack and Noah's jockey let him go and the horse was like "OMG I GET TO RUN NOW YAAAAY!!!"" and charged forward to catch up with Turned Aside, who was himself speeding up to try and hold the lead. The two of them quickly outdistanced the rest of field in a stretch challenge that unfortunately was pretty obviously going to end the way it did, with Turned Aside not having enough left to prevent his rival from eventually passing and winning by a length.

Eight Rings won by open lengths, and American Theorem was second. First US Graded Stakes runner and place, and the second overall G1 2nd place that I can think of for his sire.

Monarch of Egypt wasn't any kind of threat and finished last of 8. Siskin was wound up during the warmup and load, acted up in the gate, lost the jockey, and was a last-minute scratch. Reports are that neither he nor the jockey were injured. Monarch of Egypt seemed to break OK and spent the first few furlongs being held to 5th-6th behind the leaders and leader-chasers. A couple of furlongs out, as the positioning for the final charge was starting to take place, he was behind a row of horses and didn't make much of an effort when asked. I'm assuming the jock wanted him to move in closer to the pack in order to take advantage of any openings, and the horse wasn't willing or maybe wasn't able to catch up. Either way, he ended up being passed instead of doing the passing and was last. Earthlight made a great closing charge for the win.
