Maybe I don’t understand the concept of “smaller breeders”, but Into Mischief already stands at $150k... can smaller breeders really afford to send a single mare to him?

Sidenote, but I realized that Tapit, War Front, nor Curlin made the 140+ list. I didn’t realize their connections were so selective with their books, but I definitely approve. Into Mischief will be just fine.
I don't know how many breeders leapt at the chance for Share The Upside for Into Mischief, but those that did have free lifetime breeding rights, so I am guessing at least one of the reasons of the huge book is Spendthrift is trying to make up for all the free seasons for which they are on the hook currently.

I guarantee that is the reason. Its like he has to cover those mares + a book that is already huge. His first year at stud he only covered 61 mares, which resulted in 46 live foals, I would imagine part were owned by Spendthrift but even if 40 were free lifetime rights, that's an additional 40 mares he covers every year that they don't make money on. So of course they want to keep his books huge. It could take away 1/3 of his possible book. I still don't think he should be covering 245 mares but I understand why they also don't want this passed for economic reasons only.

Covering 245 mares is about financial greed and has nothing to do with the welfare of the stallion or the future of the breed.

^ the Jockey Club’s point, I’m sure.
I understand Spendthrift are likely trying to make up for those shareholders, but in the long run I’m sure it’ll be better for Into Mischief.

Only a handful of lifetime breeding rights to Into Mischief were awarded as a result of the Share the Upside program. First of all, Spendthift lets a very limited number of breeders participate in the program for each new stallion (certainly not 40). Then they each have to fulfill the terms of the deal. So if one of the mares you breed in the specified year aborts, doesn't conceive, or delivers a dead foal, you've missed your chance. Don't forget too, that IM wasn't initially considered to be a great stallion prospect when he started at stud. Breeders weren't beating down the doors to get to him then. So only a few lucky people are now benefitting--which really has nothing to do with how many mares the horse is bred to each year.
