2009 Kentucky Derby runner Join In the Dance (Sky Mesa) was registered black. He died in 2012. What happened?

Independence Hall (Constitution) broke his maiden September 21. Like his half-brother Black Onyx, he's as close you can get to black while being registered as dark bay.

I don't think it was ever announced. He showed up on the 2012 DRF Memoriam article but that is all I can find. He doesn't even have a death report with the Jockey Club.

He was gorgeous and one of Carrie Brogden's favorites. Here's an interview with her in a CBA (Consignors and Commercial Breeders Association) newsletter.

Who’s your favorite horse that’s come off your farm and why? Join in the Dance. He never passed a vet a day in his life and he ran 7th in the Ky Derby. Closest we have ever come to winning it as a breeder. I asked them to give him to me after his race career and they chose to give him to a LA farm instead where he died of colic. Still makes me sad

Nero a Meta (American Devil x Thimea) broke his maiden today at Toulouse. He is registered black. The articles that mention him put an apostrophe after his name. Why?

He looks gray to me...it's that bit of white at the end of his tail.
