I know shuttling is pretty much a permanent part of many stallions' careers these days, but it seems like the incidence of colic is far higher for the shippers than horses who just do their stallion duties on a single farm.

Talk about a nightmare scenario, colicking literally 15 minutes in his first non-quarantine turnout. Cambridge also just completely rebuilt their stallion complex, with a wing of the barn dedicated to their two shuttlers, the other being the equally awesome Almanzor.

What a nightmare and stressful situation for New Zealand and English/Qatari connections. I guess once he gets off the plane from New Zealand in a couple months, he won't be leaving jolly old England again.

The situation sounds really dire for Roaring Lion.
I was so happy that a son of Kitten's Joy had become such a star, and so desirable as an international stallion.
Now I just want him to survive.

Such distressing news for certain. I wonder if the stress of travel and quarantine is too much, will he just remain in New Zealand permanently.

I know Ribot ended up in the US permanently because of issues flying him home.

Flat out nuts, or crazy like a fox - who knows, but pretty much remembered for his often exceedingly bad temper. Like Dynaformer, don't ever show him your fingers up close. Some stallions have the innate ability to scare the crap out of you just by looking at you...

An argument was advanced that Ribot's behavior was due, at least in part, to a brain tumor. I'm not sure if this was just conjecture or a verified fact.

Thanks for posting this update. I've been following the story as he was my favorite European horse in training last year. Sure hope he can pull through; he's still awfully young.

My question regarding Roaring Lion is could there be a correlation between the stress from shuttling and making a long trip? I find it a coincidence that he had just gotten off the trailer from quarantine and then had an issue..ill assume Roaring Lion is done for the season? Does that mean he ships back early or stays there?

No doubt there is correlation, though a horse can colic anywhere. However the stress of shipping and quarantine certainly compounds the risk as some might not drink as well and suddenly being stall bound for a few days also changes their routine. This horse had handled transatlantic flights fine, but that is an awfully long flight to NZ and you are also having a horse go from summer to winter pretty fast which can be a jolt to the system. And yes, they mentioned he is out for the season.

Calyx, winner of the Coventry Stakes last season and a promising sophomore, has been retired and will stand at Coolmore with Juddmonte retaining some interest. He is by standout young sire Kingman and out of the Observatory mare Helleborine who was a Group 3 winner and Group 1 placed and is a sister to Group 1 winner African Rose.

If I read that article correctly, he's being retired after only four races.

And I thought Americans sent their colts off to stud too early.

I'm guessing that he is very hard to keep sound. He may have "had an explosive turn of foot," but I'm not sure I'd want to breed to such an apparently fragile horse.

Retiring early isn't just a recent American racing development. It's actually always somewhat been a thing. I've been reading up on horses from the early 20th centuey and before and I've found several that ran less than 10 times.

"Sadly not great news for Roaring Lion after his colic attack last weekend. Has undergone a second surgery where 4m of intestine has had to be removed. That can cause complications so a real setback. Vets stunned by how tough he is so the great grey is doing his part by fighting!"
