Oh my goodness... I'm shocked. Why did he need surgery in the first place?

Coincidentally, Deep Impact was 16, the same age as Sunday Silence when he passed.

I just read this headline and made a loud gasp. What a terrible blow to the breeders and industry over there. Devestated I'm sure doesn't begin to even describe how his team at Shadai must feel

Same here...I read it and said 'oh no!' out loud.
That's a huge loss, and not just for Japanese breeding. :(
I hope his sons shine as brightly for him as he did for his sire, Sunday Silence.
ETA: I clicked on that Shadai site link, and all I got was a scenic video of the farm and some horses (and no sound?). If there was a news link, I didn't see it. :(

Neither Bloodhorse nor Paulick Report has this news up, although Paulick has at least a tweet about it. Not even RacingPost is carrying it.
That should change soon.

Horrible news for TB racing worldwide. So sorry to our posters and followers of racing in Japan and all his connections, friends and fans.

I'm so sad and actually crying. He was one of my favorite racehorse ever and a phenomenal sire. R.I.P Deep Impact, champion, you never will be forgotten.

Article from Bloodhorse:

https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing ... ium=social

He was, in my opinion, the greatest Japanese racehorse ever. Combined with going on the be the best sire theyve ever had, it can be said that he was the greatest Japanese horse ever. Full stop.

It’s such a shame that both Deep Impact and his sire were lost at the relatively young ages of 16 and 17. They each already had solid foundations for their legacy, but it’s devastating nonetheless.

Japan has lost their top sire and operations like Coolmore and Flaxman Stables have lost a top international outcross. I’m sure his already expensive progeny will be priceless at the auctions for the next couple of years.

Was it ever explicitly stated that his ongoing neck condition was a result of covering 250+ mares for over 10 years in a row? I can only speculate, but I wonder if this tragedy will affect the book sizes of Shadai’s stallions in the future.

For the life of me I don't understand why more vet hospitals that perform surgery on horses don't have a recovery pool

While it's possible he could have injured himself coming out of the anesthesia, it's not definitively stated anywhere I've read so far. It could've been an underlying injury that wasn't detected, or a hairline fracture that couldn't take one more stressor, or a complication of the surgery itself.

Or okay, maybe it was anesthesia recovery but that doesn't bring him back OR make anyone feel better.

I don't even know why it's making me so mad except for the fact that I'd like just one moment to mourn maybe before we go second-guessing and pointing fingers.

Sorry, I'll go put myself on ignore.
