That body posture and the look of her says a lot...wonder where she's been since her last race in 1998. I hope we get to see the "after" photos. The transformation always amazes me and makes me smile!

Horse tripping is a horror, an absolute horror. And attempts to make it illegal are impossible in Colorado. We had a bill introduced at the state legislature a couple of years ago but all the hayseed ranchers (of which there are many in Colo) and their state reps killed it. The hayseeds are afraid that banning Mexican horse tripping is a slippery slope leading to government interference with ranch animals. Because, after all, horses are just livestock and you have a right to treat your livestock as you see fit, without the government or your neighbors sticking their noses in your business.Catalina wrote:It's high time they unlearned that habit.Secretariat4ever wrote:Mexicans are cruel to their animals. The charros need a good beating!
But even in states like California, where horse tripping is illegal, it is impossible to enforce because it is so widespread. I think the feedlots in Riverside used to be a regular provider of trip horses for SoCal Mex rodeos-- TBs are favored because they are smaller and easy to bring down.
It makes me want to puke, just thinking about it.

Rescue resource. Probably everyone knows of this but in case not, here is information on the American Humane Association's crisis assistance grant program.
The American Humane Association is a good charity. Not ARist.
http://www.americanhumane.org/animals/p ... -fund.html
Online application form.
American Humane Association's Second Chance® Fund helps offset the cost of treating homeless animal victims of abuse or neglect and it’s one way American Humane Association works to support animal welfare organization in their vital work while giving animal victims of abuse or neglect a second chance at life.
Through the Second Chance Fund, American Humane Association is able to financially assist agencies that rescue, care for, and re-home abused or neglected animals by providing financial assistance, in select cases, to organizations responsible for the temporary care of animals as they are prepared for adoption into permanent, loving homes.
General guidelines of the Fund include:
Due to the overwhelming number of abuse cases nationwide, the Second Chance® Fund is offered only in select cases of animal abuse or neglect. Funding is awarded on a case-by-case basis. Selected cases will be used for fundraising purposes.
Only animal sheltering agencies (public or private) and rescue groups are considered for the Second Chance® Fund.
Individuals, businesses and corporations are not provided for in the guidelines of the fund.
Funding may be used only to cover medical procedures for animals that have been victims of abuse or neglect and require medical treatment before being placed for adoption. Routine medical procedures -- such as vaccinations, heartworm testing, behavior modification and/or training are outside the scope of this fund. Spay/neuter surgery, if listed in the itemized costs of care, even if not medically necessary for treatment, are eligible.
Medical procedures covered under the fund will allow animals to medically recover and live a relatively pain-free life.
Animals involved can be successfully placed in new homes.
Funding to any one agency is limited to $2,000 per fiscal year.
Applications must be received no later than 6 months following the date of intake of the animal(s).
Only applications received through the appropriate online submission process will be eligible.
Before submitting an application, applicants must ensure that it includes all of the following documents or their request will be considered incomplete and may be discarded:
Copy of 501(c)(3) determination letter
Completed application
All itemized veterinary receipts* (must be issued by veterinarian’s office)
Signed general release (Revised version includes the photo and media release).
Before and/or after digital photographs of animals**
*If services are/were provided by on-staff veterinarian, itemized receipts must reflect out-of-pocket expenses only -- not retail value.

Just wanted to post the latest picture of Cymple Rhythm sent by SCTR in an email update today. I need the occasional reminder of why we seem to keep beating our heads against the wall trying to do right by the race horses that give us so much pleasure.Catalina wrote:Aside from making her feel better, it undoubtedly it reminded her of the distant past when things were wonderful and she was a cherished filly. We are so glad, girl, that you are finally, at long last, cherished again.second_glance wrote:Cymple Rhythm, now known as Della, had a very gentle bath this morning. She appeared to enjoy it.
"Our vet believes that Cymple Rhythm should be sound for various riding activities, and we plan to place her in training this year towards a new career. We are grateful again for the meticulous care of caretaker and volunteer Kathy Fischer in putting Cymple Rhythm back together again, as she did Carla Angel, a starvation case that we took in last February."

Amazes me over and over again what actually feeding and caring for a horse properly can do. If only everyone understand that. Good news for her- she looks soooo happy.

Looks like AHR got High Z, as well as Great Journey & Singlestar. Not sure AHR got the stallion, Seattle Souvenir, back from the KB who paid $80 for him or just negotiated his sale to someone else, but he is apparently safe. Other rescues were there and apparently got some of the other TBs, but I haven't found out which yet.Jennywho wrote:Several tbs at Mikes Auction in CA tonight including the tough old campaigner HIgh Z, breaks my heart
There was a TB colt (~5yo; no name, no tattoo) brought in with an old tripping-type injury that someone else got. He's going to need some serious long-term rehab to be something other than a companion horse, I think.

After the Finish Line (Dawn Mellen's group) took the 3 TBs pulled by AHR. Here are photos. I'll add links for those on FB, with initial assessments.
This is High Z, and he breaks my heart. Last raced in 2008; life has not been good for him recently. They think he might have been used for tripping. He is 13.

This is the stallion, Seattle Souvenir. Raced 5 times; earned less than $24K. Sigh. Just because Seattle is in a horse's name and Seattle Slew is in his bloodline does not mean he should be bred! He is also 13.

This is Singlestar (Singletary), youngest (6) and in the best shape. Last raced 10/25/13 at Los Al.

Thanks for the pics and update. Agree with the Seattle comment. Hoping he will be gelded once settled in?second_glance wrote:After the Finish Line (Dawn Mellen's group) took the 3 TBs pulled by AHR. Here are photos. I'll add links for those on FB, with initial assessments.

The hayseed faction is so worried about federal interference in how they are treating their farm animals? Really? Really... You know, the first thing that comes to mind is that the guilty flee where no man pursueth. Maybe the feds should take a closer look.perfectsoul wrote:Horse tripping is a horror, an absolute horror. Amen to that! The idiocy of people amazes me. Maybe these low value breeders think they've bought another Ole Bob Bowers and the next John Henry will spring forth from the mare's loins.
Poor babies. I am glad to see they are safe.
WTH is wrong with people?

Grand news about Boston Baked Bean, who showed up at Mike's Auction in October, the day after running at Los Al. After hard work by many, he ended up going to the home of his sire, Hallmarc Stallions. Today word came that he has cleared all his vet exams, will go to Rachel Nelson, and be trained for dressage/eventing career by Emily Brollier, a Grand Prix-level trainer! Hallmarc will continue to sponsor Boston as he transitions to his new life, and Miramonte Equine has offered to pay for 12 lessons for the pair. Hallmarc tweets, "He has a body to die for and a huge personality!" With his new owner:
