Just curious, comparing our Derby with big races around the world. Full fields like the Arc or Melbourne, wherever, what happens when there's bumping at a critical point in the race? Are there unwritten let 'em run rules that everybody understands? Any famous DQ's?

Nureyev was disqualified in the 1980 2,000 Guineas. There have been more recent disqualifications in the 1,000 Guineas.

Can't remember the year and the other horse involved but quite recently, Simple Verse won the St. Leger (3rd leg of the English Triple Crown) but there was some bumping around in the final furlong. After a long inquiry she was disqualified but it was clear to everyone watching that she shouldn't have been. The owners appealed and Simple Verse ended up being reinstated as the winner.

Will say though, majority of the British racing folks on Twitter were very much against Maximum Security's DQ. I don't know the rules in Britain well enough but it seems that under our rules Maximum Security would not be disqualified.

I know that Ascot regularly has 32-horse fields on their straight mile course, but that stretch is wide enough for 32 horses to run side-by-side all the way to the finish line. The longer races that start on the 'round' course have lots of elbow room, and a fair bit of distance before the first turn.
The generous width of race courses in Australia, Europe and Japan tend to prevent the sort of Demolition-Derby crowding that we are seeing every year at Churchill.

Frankel had his first European classic winner today when Anapurna won the Oaks under Frankie for John Gosden. It’s nice to see an relatively small owner-breeder like Meon Valley Stud bag a classic over Coolmore. Coolmore owns or co-owns 7 of the 13 runners in the Derby tomorrow.

NBC Sports to Televise Epsom Derby on Saturday

NBC Sports’ live horse racing coverage continues with the 240th running of the Epsom Derby this Saturday, June 1 at 10 a.m. ET on NBCSN from Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, England.

The race is the second jewel of the English Triple Crown, which begins with the Two Thousand Guineas and concludes with the St Leger.

The Epsom Derby is the U.K.’s richest horse race, with a purse of more than 1.6 million British pounds (more than $2 million U.S. dollars).

Renowned Irish horse racing trainer Aidan O’Brien, who has trained six past winners of the race, will field eight of the 15 runners in the race, including contenders Anthony Van Dyck and Sir Dragonet. Anthony Van Dyck ran in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Churchill Downs, competing against 2019 Preakness Stakes winner War of Will.

Connections confirmed ROGER BAROWS will go to the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in October.

Roger Barows (JPN - Deep Impact x Little Book [GB]) won the Japanese Derby on May 26. He has one G1 win and a G2 second in six career starts (3 wins, 2 seconds).

Worth noting that the BCJ Turf has produced the last two Epsom Derby winners, a Preakness winner, and a Travers and Belmont Derby winner. Also worth noting not a single one of them hit the board in the race (Catholic Boy might've been fourth IIRC).

Also produced several KD runners, like My Boy Jack, Flameaway, etc.

Sottsass was impressive though. And I hadn't realized he was the younger brother of Sistercharlie! What a nice producer Starlet's Sister has turned out to be.
