He was a really good racehorse on any surface, raced through (IIRC) his seventh year and retired sound, handsome as heck and had a good temperament. Also provided an interesting outcross with his Spend a Buck bloodline.
I think he's only 16 or 17, but I guess his yearlings just didn't wow at the sales, and he didn't sire precocious speedsters. :(
I mean they gave him a chance. He got decent size books most years. He didn't have great fertility averaging about 57%. His first year, which was his biggest book, he had 46% fertility.
Perhaps his fertility got worse and they decided to just retire him. Or they just looked at his sire stats and decided he doesn't need to sire anything else. Because let's be honest, he got 2 stakes winners. One was a Canterbury Downs and the other was over jumps. Breeders want to use a stallion that at least gives them a chance at a stakes winner maybe.

I feel like sporthorse breeders in the US or (more likely) Europe would have appreciated him, at a lower price point of course. He did sire the NSA Champion Novice horse last year (Iranistan, the jumps stakes winner you mentioned) and his conformation is superb. I feel like Americain is going on a similar path and I wish Thoroughbred stallion owners would go outside the box a little more with these non-commercial horses.

Unfortunately sporthorse breeders in the U.S. aren't breeding to Thoroughbreds.

Yep, they would rather breed to 18 hand Hanoverians with heads the size of a barn door.

He was only standing for $2,000. I feel like if sport horse breeders had approached the farm he was standing at that, they probably would have cut a deal on the stud fee. I just don't think getting one good steeplechase horse is enough. Plus I'm pretty sure people don't breed jump horses in the US, at least not like they do in Europe. Its more failed flat horses and imported horses.

No. He is shuttling there for the Southern Hemisphere breeding season.

Sioux Nation will be shuttling to Australia and standing at Swettenham Stud. Americain will be moving from Swettenham to Daisy Hill.

Arent the importing/exporting and quarantine regulations of horses in South Africa too strict to allow shuttling?

Blood Horse saying Pioneer of the Nile has died. How awful. Makes a pretty crappy day that much crappier.

I don't know. It just sounded like he was shuttling to me, cause both articles I read said X was managing his Northern Hemisphere stud career and Y was managing his Southern Hemisphere stud career.

It is incredibly sad. Fappiano and Unbridled both died young too, at 13 and 14. :(

He's a huge loss. So sad.

As an aside, does WinStar still exercise some of their stallions under saddle?

Heartbreaking about Pioneer. Seems just yesterday he was a promising 3-year-old on the Derby trail. They think he died of a ruptured aorta. That can happen to any human and animal. It happened to my beloved little Kitty just before Christmas 2017...in fact, only two days after the devastating San Luis Rey Downs fire. Aortic dissection usually happens rapidly, without warning, and usually kills too fast for medical intervention. I don't have words adequate enough to express how sorry I am about Pioneer's death.

Rotten news about Pioneerof the Nile. The only consolation is that he has several very promising sons at stud in American Pharoah, Cairo Prince, Midnight Storm and Classic Empire.
