BLOOD-HORSE SERIES THIS WEEK ON PHIPPS BREEDING & RACING SUCCESS

BloodHorse magazine online has published a series of three stories this week on the Phipps family's breeding and racing.

Wednesday's story "European Import Relaxing Brings La Troienne Influence" by Tom Hall nicely details the link between Ogden Phipps' acquisition of bloodstock in 1946 from Col. E.R. Bradley and how these bloodlines still achieving success in the Phipps barn.

As part of BloodHorse's backtrack series, it republished on Thursday its 1981 story "Relaxing Tops Males in 1981 John B. Campbell" about Ogden Phipps' 1981 Eclipse award champion.

Alan Porter's Friday column on pedigrees, "Well Defined Brings Phipps Family Pedigrees to the Fore," examines the prominent Phipps bloodlines in 2019 Triple Crown contender Well Defined who won the Sam F. Davis S. (G3) on Saturday at Tampa.

CAN PHIPPS & JANNEY'S CRIME LAB SOLVE ANOTHER MYSTERY TODAY?
#8, Gulfstream R1, $32k MCL, 1 1/16 mi. turf (8/1 ML), 12:35 pm ET

After not racing in 2018, Phipps Stable & Stuart Janney’s 5-year-old horse CRIME LAB is already making his third start of 2019 at Gulfstream Park with jockey Brian Hernandez riding.

Crime Lab ended his layoff by finishing eighth in a maiden claiming race on January 11 (replay at http://bit.ly/GP011119r10). Despite coming out of the gate well and showing promise by dueled on the pace through the final turn, he didn’t have any gas left after these efforts and weakened in the final furlong to finish 6¾ lengths behind the winner.

He moved forward his next time out to cross the wire in fourth place on January 23 (replay at http://bit.ly/GP012319r4). He stalked the pace on the rail in fourth place before traffic forced him to move outside for the final furlong where he finished 2¾ lengths behind the winner.

After only three starts in 2017 and not racing in 2018, this determined horse has earned his way back to the starting gate to finish on the board for trainer Shug McGaughey. Let’s hope he can solve another mystery today and find his way into the winners circle.

Crime Lab’s is a half brother of Phipps & Janney’s multiple graded stakes winner INSPECTOR LYNLEY who won the G3 Tampa Bay Stakes on February 9. Could his brother's win be an indicator of things to come from this homebred’s family today? Their mother CRIMINOLOGIST was a Phipps & Janney-bred victor of four grade III stakes.

To Crime Lab's immediate inside post will be the 5/2 morning line favorite KING ORB (#7), a four-year-old Claiborne-bred son of Orb. Trained by Linda Rice and ridden by Irad Ortiz, King Orb finished second last time out in Crime Lab’s January 23 Gulfstream start.

WILL PHIPPS STABLE’S FAST TALKING BE FAST RUNNING TODAY?
#3, Gulfstream R4, $50k MSW, 6f dirt, 2:05 pm ET

Phipps Stable’s 4-year-old colt FAST TALKING is making his second career start today and looks to be primed for some fast running.

He's shown positive signs in training this winter for Shug McGaughey in Florida at Payson Park Thoroughbred Training Center. He put in a bullet workout breezing 4 furlongs on dirt in 48.80 seconds (1/34) on Saturday.

He finished seventh in his only career start, which was on March 17 last year in a $50,000 maiden special weight at Gulfstream with jockey Edgar Zayas. Fast Talking picks up Jose L. Ortiz for his start today.

Fast Talking’s impressive pedigree is full of accomplished Phipps winners, including grade I stakes winners DANCING FOREVER, SEEKING THE GOLD, OH WHAT A WINDFALL, and Hall of Famer HEAVENLY PRIZE.

Still on the young side for a Shug McGaughey-trained starter, Passing Out was foaled on April 13, 2016 and shipped out of Niall Brennan Stables in September where all Phipps-breds are broken. Stuart S. Janney III & Phipps Stable's 3-year-old homebred daughter of 2013 Kentucky Derby champion ORB won in exciting fashion at Gulfstream Park on Saturday by closing strong in the final furlong to break her maiden in her first career start.

Jockey José L. Ortiz had a lot of horse under him that allowed them to remain near the front for the entire race and pull away in the stretch.

It looks like we have a live Orb grass filly with deep Phipps family bloodlines going back to the 1920s on our hands.

UPDATED: BARRIER ISLAND SEEKING A BREAKTHROUGH THURSDAY
#5, Gulfstream R5, $51,000 AOC, 1 & 1/16 mi. dirt, 2:37 pm ET

Phipps Stable’s 4-year-old stakes-placed filly BARRIER ISLAND (Speightstown—Boca Grande, by A.P. Indy) is ending a 3-month layoff and looking for a breakthrough on Thursday at Gulfstream Park, the same track she broke her maiden at as a juvenile early last winter.

Following her December 2017 Gulfstream win, her third career start, she began her sophomore campaign in 2018 with a third-place finish in the $125,000 Gasparilla Stakes (black type) on Jan. 20 at Tampa Bay Downs. She was then laid off for 9 months before returning for a fifth-place finish in a $77,000 allowance race on October 17 at Belmont. Barrier Island moved forward in her second start off of the layoff by finishing third in a $75,000 allowance on November 17 at Belmont.

Barrier Island has been training for Shug McGaughey this winter at Indiantown, Florida-based Payson Park Thoroughbred Training Center, commonly known as the “Club Med for Thoroughbreds”. She ran a BULLET in her first timed workout of the month, breezing 4 furlongs on the Payson dirt in 49.2 seconds (1/22) on February 2.

Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez has her mount again and the race, going one mile and a sixteenth, will be the longest of her career. Her previous starts have only been up to a mile long, all on the dirt.

She’s breaking from post five in a six-horse field and she will enter the race as the 9/5 morning line second favorite (behind Saracosa (KY) at 8/5 with Tyler Gaffalione riding, not one of the red hot Ortiz brothers).

McGaughey has had good recent luck with Phipps starters coming off of layoffs this winter. February wins include 6-year-old horse INSPECTOR LYNLEY ending a 2-month layoff to win the Tampa Bay Stakes (G3), 4-year-old filly COVER MODEL breaking her maiden coming off of a 4-month layoff, and 4-year-old colt FAST TALKING breaking his maiden in his first start in 11 months. Barrier Island would make a nice addition to those Phipps homebreds experiencing breakthroughs this winter in Florida.

BREAKING THE RULES CRACKS INTO GRADED STAKES COMPANY
#7 Gulfstream R5, 4yos & up, 1 mi. turf, 1:30 pm ET

March 2, 2019 (Hallendale Beach, Fla.) — Phipps Stable’s 4-year-old colt BREAKING THE RULES (War Front—Protesting, by A.P. Indy) is ending a two-month layoff on Saturday and making his first career graded stakes start in the $150,000 Canadian Turf Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park. It's been a long road getting to where he's at now, but he’s entering the race as the 9/5 morning line favorite and will break from the outside post of the seven-horse field.

After winning his debut at Gulfstream on March 24 of last year, Breaking the Rules (BTR) won again on May 6 in a $77,000 allowance race at Belmont. The barn was high on the son of Claiborne Farm stallion War Front’s potential before a series of three unsatisfactory finishes: sixth in the $150,000 Easy Goer Stakes (listed) at Belmont on June 9, second in an $96,000 Belmont allowance optional claiming (AOC) race on July 7, and fourth in an $92,000 AOC at Saratoga on August 11.

Unsatisfied with his downward trend on the dirt, Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey moved him to turf for his sixth career start, a $92,000 AOC on September 1 at Saratoga where he finished third (1¼ length behind the dueling first two finishers). McGaughey's patience paid off when BTR came back to earn his first turf win in an $80,000 AOC at Belmont on October 6.

Following the win, he benefited from a 12-week layoff before returning to the races on December 29 to win his first career stakes race by nearly 4 lengths in the $75,000 Tropical Park Derby (listed) at Gulfstream (replay at http://bit.ly/PhippsStable-BTR).

BTR retains the services of jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. for his start today. Ortiz has ridden him to victory in his four career wins over dirt and turf.

Ortiz enters the race as the winner of last year's Canadian Turf Stakes, a race in which he rode owner Michael Hui’s 9-year-old Michael Maker-trained horse HOGY to victory. Ortiz—who has already racked up five graded stakes wins in 2019—currently leads North America in wins (86) and earnings (the only jockey with more than $6 million).

McGaughey has won the Canadian Turf Stakes twice: in 2013 with Stuart S. Janney III’s grade 1 stakes winner DATA LINK (War Front—Database, by Known Fact) and the following year with Phipps Stable’s multiple graded stakes winner RELOAD (Hard Spun—Hidden Reserve, by Mr. Prospector).

McGaughey was red hot in February with Phipps horses with a 63 percent win rate (finishing first in 5 of 8 starts). Four of the winners came off of layoffs, including 6-year-old horse INSPECTOR LYNLEY (co-owned with Mr. Janney) ending a 2-month layoff to win the Tampa Bay Stakes (G3), 4-year-old filly COVER MODEL breaking her maiden coming off of a 4-month layoff, 4-year-old colt FAST TALKING breaking his maiden in his first start in 11 months, and 4-year-old stakes-placed filly BARRIER ISLAND ending a 3-month layoff to win her first race in over a year. The fifth Phipps February winner, 3-year-old homebred ORB filly PASSING OUT (co-owned with Mr. Janney), won in her debut.

Today will be a good test to see if BTR will continue his upward trend while racing among graded stakes company. It will also be interesting to see if McGaughey and the fabled black silks and cherry cap continue their hot streak.

March 2, 2019 — Phipps Stable's 4-year-old War Front colt Breaking the Rules got a clean trip and closed well to come up just a nose short of winning his graded stakes debut in the Canadian Turf on Saturday at Gulfstream Park. It's clear from the race that he’s at home on the turf in graded stakes company.

He received a nice ride from his jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. who has ridden him for all four of his career victories.

BTR is looking good on and off the track and is going to be enjoyable to follow as he moves forward from here.

ORB’S FULL BROTHER PERSONAL TIME MAKING TURF DEBUT TODAY

Stuart S. Janney III & Phipps Stable’s PERSONAL TIME (Malibu Moon—Lady Liberty, by Unbridled) is ending a 2-month layoff today and looking for his first career win in what will be his seventh career start (6:0-3-0) and his debut on the turf. He is going to break from post position #2 and is entering the race as the 2-1 morning line favorite (entries at http://bit.ly/equibase-GP030319r6).

Personal Time has had very good recent workouts in training for Shug McGaughey at Payson Park Thoroughbred Training Center, including breezing 3 furlongs on turf in 36.0 seconds yesterday. He breezed two bullets in January, most notably breezing 4 furlongs on dirt in 48.6 seconds (1/12) on January 20.

He retains jockey José L. Ortiz who rode him to a runner-up finish in his January 3 start at Gulfstream. Ortiz currently ranks third for wins (65) and earnings ($3.1 million) at Gulfstream’s 2018-2019 Championship Meet, with a win rate of 18 percent of his mounts and finishing 45 percent of them in the money.

Ortiz is having success in riding for this barn, winning two of three of his most recent mounts for Janney & Phipps. These wins include 6-year-old horse INSPECTOR LYNLEY (Lemon Drop Kid—Criminologist, by Maria’s Mon) in the $175,000 Tampa Bay Stakes (G3) on February 9 at Tampa Bay Downs, Inc. and 3-year-old filly PASSING OUT (Orb—Party Now, by Tiznow) in her debut on February 23 at Gulfstream. He also rode Phipps Stable’s 4-year-old colt FAST TALKING (Flatter—Puzzling, by Ghostzapper) to a maiden-breaking win in his second career start on February 21 at Gulfstream. Both Inspector Lynley and Fast Talking were coming off of layoffs, just like Personal Time is today.

PHIPPS STABLE’S SEA GHOST ENTERED FOR DEBUT

Phipps Stable’s well-bred (see below) 3-year-old colt SEA GHOST (Ghostzapper—Sea Trial, by Unbridled’s Song) racing at Tampa Bay on Sunday in his first career start. Jockey Pablo Morales has the mount.

Sea Ghost is the first foal out of Phipps Stable’s broodmare Sea Trial (8:1-0-2), winner of a $40,000 maiden special weight race at Laurel Park in Oct. 2014 going 8 furlongs on turf (the same distance and surface as her son’s debut).

Sea Ghost is a grandson of Phipps Stable’s STORM FLAG FLYING, and thus also from the deep Phipps family that also includes MY FLAG and EASY GOER. Going further back, his Phipps family includes such accomplished relatives as RELAXING, PRIVATE ACCOUNT, GRECIAN BANNER, NUMBERED ACCOUNT, BOLD RULER, and BUCKPASSER (https://www.pedigreequery.com/sea+trial4).

Like all Phipps homebreds, Sea Ghost was foaled and Claiborne Farm, broken and introduced to the track at Niall Brennan Stables, and relocated to Fair Hill Stables where he trained with the Phipps string there. FLY SO HIGH WORKING TOWARDS HER COMEBACK

March 12, 2019 — One year after Phipps Stable's filly FLY SO HIGH (Malibu Moon—Quiet Flight, by Quiet American) sustained an injury in her victory in the Davona Dale Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park, there's good news to report. The 4-year old is on the road to a potential racing comeback thanks to the good work of the folks at Niall Brennan Stables in Ocala, Florida. Pictured is Fly So High jogging last week. Fire Away's was a rare sale purchase for the Phipps family, which has been breeding and racing since 1926.
