Remember Wide-Eyed Wanderer -- the mare rescued at auction found to have several screws in her mouth? Well, the vets were finally able to get one of them out today. And this is what they found:

Cannot begin to imagine in what kind of mind this was a smart thing to do.

The photo is large enough that I have to scroll down to see it all...and I could not believe how the screw kept going on and on and on...
Oh My God.
How could anyone put something like that in a living creature's jaw? Her pain must have been excruciating.
The Seventh Ring of Hell would be too good for Wide-Eyed Wanderer's former owner.

This is part of what it took: Dawn/Mellen/After the Finish Line and some previous owners offering money not just for purchase and transport, but for care & rehab; The Race Fund arranging urgent transport and layover; Deborah Jones leading the networking and Melissa Ruderhausen being in the right place at the right time; and, most of all, Jim Rhodes of Equine Rescue of Aiken offering to take in all three broodies.. They will leave Sunday for Aiken.

There were a lot of TBs at New Holland today, say people who were there; some sold to non-KBs; I am looking to see if other rescues got others.
The Three Wise Mares (as Heather in Aiken has dubbed them. They started the day in the hands of a kill buyer, but are resting tonight in a fine barn (thanks to the Race Fund), and on Sunday will make their way to their new home in Aiken. From L to Right: E's on Main, Buffed Ice, and Apollo Miss:

That.

And that's only the first screw they now got out. There's several more, if memory serves. Hope the poor mare recovers.

Sterling's Stormy. Video summary of his rescue in California and new home in Maryland. A little overly sentimental, but it is good to see him happy and cared for again. According to the video he was purchased for $35 at auction. He's still lovely and was a beautiful show pony at one time it seems. That long, long neck! Good job to all the rescue teams involved.

Does anyone know this horse's whole story? Who owned him? Who showed him and took the posed pictures? Did he have one owner or changed hands? How did he originally go from Maryland to California (if he was a Chincoteague pony)? Who sent him to auction? Are people aware they can surrender their animals to genuine horse rescues? I know some rescues work with owners to rehome horses, is that common?

I agree. I don't know how common this type of thing is among rough rider horse people, but it seems cruel to me. Maybe the thinking is vet's insert screws and plates in horses bones, so it is just another tool? Amazing the mare didn't have some kind of big infection going, but apparently she didn't... I don't know. Hope the others come out soon.

It does make you wonder whether that was done by a vet or a vet technician.

Trainer Jose De La Torre, who has dumped both QHs and TBs at low-end auctions, has been kicked out of Los Alamitos for clenbuterol positives.

"One of the nation's leading quarter horse trainers" - now that is appalling.

Other than that, one gold star for karma.

Unfortunately for the horses in De La Torre's stable, he's just been kicked out of Los Al. There will be tracks in New Mexico, Texas or Louisiana who may gladly rent him stall space.
The question is whether some of his owners will take their horses away from him. My guess? No...he's been racking up those Clenbuterol positives for years, but he still gets horses.

Unfortunately for his horses, because in the LA area, at least there was a rescue frequenting the low end auctions de la Torre favors, and thus succeeding in rescuing some of his rejects.

Will his owners leave him? Only if they like to watch the races in in person.

Via AHR onsite to bid, SCTR purchased a 2005 Victory Gallop gelding named Rogue Victory at auction yesterday ... for $85.00. Will have a photo soon. RV earned >$250K in 31 starts, all in the east.

Yeah. And it's so frustrating is that several of his connex would probably have been happy to help place him somewhere safe, if only the last owner had contacted them.

Pulled from same auction:

Four-year-old Thoroughbred "Boomerang Lou," last raced March 2013 at Los Alamitos. Since his last race, ended up with charros in Central California. Brought to auction with deep lacerations to his gums, tongue, and beneath his chin, he's headed back down south to join Equine Racers rescue.

Nine-year-old Kentucky-bred Thoroughbred mare "Avada Kedava," by Grindstone, last raced at Golden Gate Fields in 2008. She came to auction, an unassuming, smaller mare with neglected feet and a kind temperament. Also rescued, we are working on her placement now.

10-year-old gelding "Storm Crash," by Illinois Storm, was owned by the same charros who had so radically abused Boomerang Lou. Storm, along with a paint gelding with a fresh injury exposing his skull, and a scared paint pony, were rescued for Equine Rescue Center.

Those injuries sound so severe that you would think that a formal case of animal cruelty could be made against those 'charros.'

It is beyond me how the local authorities can just totally blow off something like this. Ditto for dogfighting and cockfighting. "Cultural heritage" be damned. Do these folks just make generous donations, or what? Or do they all just have relations in high places?

Mexicans are cruel to their animals. The charros need a good beating!
