That's nice to hear. I never realized his coat was so dark; he's almost black.

Sorry to hear about I Want Revenge. He reminds me of the hard-luck Dollar Bill.
i don't see any brown in his face, could he be one of those "he's black but it wasn't worth the hassle to prove it to the JC" horses?
Jockey Club probably said he was brown because he had one brown hair in his tail or something.

I've also heard that if a horse has a white star or like one white sock they'll register it as bay or dark bay, because "white means not black" or whatever. Not sure though.

Why is the JC like this?
He is registered as dark bay/brown because he is dark bay or brown. He is dkb/br in every picture I have seen. The 2 above he is covered with a sheet or in a dark barn plus he probably has his winter coat. Google images of him, he is brown.

here's one of shanghai bobby not in his winter coat, in a sheet, or in a dark barn. is he brown? is he sunbleached, as someone tried to tell me songster was/is in an older pic i once questioned? i've seen friesian's with this sort of brownish hue, do pure friesians come in dark bay, or does black have various hues that are accepted and still recognised as black?

i'm actually looking for info, not being a sarcastic twit.

It turns out there are two types of black - fading and non-fading. Examples can be found here:

As far as I know, the only way to be sure is genetic testing (UC Davis offers it).

... historically there is some evidence that there were bay Friesians, according to Wikipedia.

and this was an old but interesting thread about the weeding out of the red gene from the Studbook

Both of mine are registered as dark bay but one was actually smokey black; his muzzle was black all year round. He had cream colored hair in his ears and lighter brown eyes. Was black in winter but would turn a burnished brass color on his sides and butt in summer. He also had a dorsal stripe down his back.

Cream doesn't effect black so what you're describing is just the different effects of black, period.
Which parent was the cream carrier?

Re: another post and white horse productions, that's an OLD site and largely outdated. There is no genetic differentation in black vs 'fading' black. It's been more largely determined to be diet effected.

This Fiber Sonde seems like he’s doing ok in WV for $1,000. Unbridleds Song x Silken Cat (so he’s a half to Speightstown). He never ran a race.

Beau Ridge Farm supported him with their own mares and once his foals started winning stakes races people took notice and he's been getting 50+ mares a season. Even being among the state's top sires he has stood at the same price of $1000 since his first year at stud.

Beau Ridge used to stand Aye's Turn who was leading WV sire for many years in the 80s and 90s. Like Fiber Sonde he was unaccomplished on the track but had a stellar female family.

Both Satono Diamond and Satono Crown will start his sire career next year at Shadai Stallion Station!

Satono Diamond will run Arima Kinen as his last race... And Satono Crown will unregister in JRA soon.

Order of St. George is listed as a stallion on Coolmore's National Hunt site. When he retired they said plans weren't known yet, and that was a month or so ago.

So there's a George update.

I mean, he had to go there, right? Not sure where else he will be fashionable. I'm sure he'll cover 200+ mares.

Chrome says, "Are we there yet?!"

On a side note, Chrome got some elite mares in his second Chilean book, including a couple by Galileo. It will be interesting to see how those matings turn out. Being a Cal-bred with a modest regional pedigree, he has an uphill climb in the elite US sales, but his first weanlings to sell were reasonably well-received at Keeneland last month. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DtQZixDWwAIdBM8.jpg

No surprise, but it is a shame.

He's one who I think would have really benefited from a rest, and a 4 yr old season. Love to have seen him with some size and maturity on him.
