Horrible Names For Horses

That Voodoo You Do comes from a very old Frank Sinatra song, Opry from the Grand Ole Opry. I'm really dating myself with the song. That must be from the 1950's or earlier.

Yes, but how do the the sire and dam's names add up to Opry? Sinatra wasn't a country singer, and Declaration of War has no connection to Nashville, country music, the Opry or anything else in that vein. OTOH, there was a 2007 foal also named Opry. Her dam was Acuff -- Roy Acuff was a country music legend and the heart and soul of the Opry.

Put That Voodoo Youdo on the "what?" list, too. She's by Speightstown-Our Friend Terry, by Cox's Ridge. Again, probably the favorite song of someone with a say on the name of the horse, who was probably going to name a horse that regardless of pedigree.

I can remember that song from the old Lawrence Welk show. It was usually sung by one of the regular performers, he used to be in western costume. Don't ask me to name him, even my memory isn't that good.
In the early '60's, my father, in the USAF, was stationed on Okinawa. I lived there for 3 years. 1 TV station. We were stuck with the old Welk show every night at 7:30. Unfortunately, I remember that well.

You must hate the way Lipizzaners are named then. Every horse's name is a combination of the sire's name followed by the dam's name.

Moscow Burning actually sounds cool... could have been a good name in reference to the Bolshevik revolution, or a WWII name. But I agree sometimes pedigree names get out of hand.

On the other hand though just be glad you aren’t into Shagya Arabians. The stallion I fell in love with last summer, was named Ghazal XXI, son of Ghazal XIX however was the uncle of Ghazal XXII.
There were also several Shagya XXI, and several O’Bajans. Keep in mind those were all stallions standing at the same farm at the same time.

I am sure there has to be some sort of logic in their numeral system and I noticed they sometimes will have the exact same Roman numerals but a different number in front of the name. Like here this stud’s dam’s name is an exact repetition of the damsire but for the number in front.

For instance there were two fillies by Man o' War out of a mare called The Nurse.
One was named Florence Nightingale (famous for her actions in the Crimean War); the other was Edith Cavell (a famous WWI British Nurse)

I also like names that are "themed" for lack of a better word.

For example: Real Delight (1949) -> Plum Cake (1958) -> Yule Log (1970) -> Christmas Past (1979) -> Christmas List (1995) -> Check it Twice (2005)

Three of the worst examples of pedigree-based names were cheap horses on the New England circuit in the '70s: a son of the sire Blasting Charge given the name of Charging Blast, and siblings by Free Call-Fay Long named Free Long and Long Call!
