BaroqueAgain1 wrote: Sun Sep 23, 2018 4:15 pm Also really disappointed to see that they may retire Mendelssohn before he gets a chance to show how good he could be as a more mature, stronger four-year-old. I see the tiniest sliver of hope in that they have not listed a fee for him, although the likeliest explanation there is that they're waiting to see how he does in his last couple or races.
Along with 'Bobby, another name I don't see on that list is Astern. Wasn't that Aussie MdO colt brought north to stand at Ashford?
Yeah that's pretty much it. If he becomes a G1 winner on dirt he'll be more valuable than if he finishes out the current season with no other wins. Glad I got to see him run in person at least once, but I do find it to be a pity, I was hoping after the announcement that Justify would stand at Ashford, Mendelssohn would get another year because they wouldn't need two graded stakes winners on dirt by Scat Daddy at the same time. Just think how his amazing half siblings got better with age, the possibilities! He already won at Meydan, why not send him to the Dubai World Cup? What if he doesn't win the JCGC or the BCC or the Pegasus? Why not give him another year to earn multiple G1s on Dirt? They paid 3 million $ for him, his career earnings currently stand at $2,227,137... they could earn back his price and beyond if they let him run another year and then they wouldn't have to set his fee in such a manner that they'd need to 'earn back' on their investment.

(yeah yeah I know. I'll get over it)

Texas Chrome to Remain Retired
Danny Keene had debated a racing comeback for his millionaire Texas Chrome, but said he recently decided against it. Texas Chrome will stand his second season at stud this coming year, at a new facility Keene has built for the horse in Hot Springs, Ark.

~ Interesting. I wasn’t aware there was ever a comeback being debated. I don’t have a DRF account so I couldn’t read the full thing, just the blurb. I can’t wait for the report of mares bred for 2018 to see how many he got (which may or may not offer insight).

Coolmore is so hit or miss when it comes to keeping some of their stallions in training. We were so lucky to have St Nicholas Abbey, Duke of Marmalade, and Highland Reel. But then Gleneagles, Churchill, Caravaggio, and now Mendelssohn are retired when they look (or looked) like they could go on to be nice four year olds. :(

I agree, and sometimes as much as I dislike I do understand their decision to rush to the shed, but this one is particularly difficult to justify (har har) so it makes it a hard pill to swallow. I fully admit Highland Reel had given me hope, combined with getting the large red one in the shed and them saying stuff like Mendelssohn was slowly starting to figure out dirt racing, and getting used to it and so on.

If Mendel doesn't win the JCGC or BCC, I could see them stomaching a four year old season, or a partial one, because they need that premier dirt race for his resume (or at least I think so). They'll probably go to the Pegasus regardless. Of course they could retire him tomorrow. I don't know.

It would actually make sense to try the DWC with him, since he already has a G2 win over the surface.

Kelso Winner Start of a Pattern for Adios Charlie?

https://www.drf.com/news/sparkman-kelso ... os-charlie

~ Interesting Sparkaman piece about the reemergence of the Caro sire line (through Uncle Mo and now possible Adios Charlie). Also, a quote “Like many of our current starts, Adios Charlie was a very good racehorse for a very short time.”

Now Good Magic is off to the shed. Mendelssohn really could take home some nice prizes as an older horse if he stays in training.

I have many questions. Also a mild headache.
And gutted they've already decided to retire Mendelssohn... the same year as Justify, really? They must be real confident about the JCGC and the BCC... maybe the Pegasus. But I don't understand he's a mid-May foal, I'd give up my first born to see what he could do as a 4yo.

Edit: also where is Shanghai Bobby?
[/quote]

I sent an email to Ashford Stud about Shanghai Bobby as I wondered where he was, as well. Response:

Shanghai Bobby has been leased to Japan for a year so will not be in Ky in 2019.
If I can help further please let me know.

Wow! -- Which stud in Japan?
JBBA?
Shadai?

The Factor(USA) stood at JBBA Shizunai Stud for one-year lease in between February and August 2018.

Wow thanks for that info! Glad they didn’t sell him and that he will be back, this is also a good opportunity for him I’d think!

Irish War Cry retired to Northview Stallion Station in Maryland. More details at Bloodhorse, my phone refuses to do links. Or, I'm still too dumb to know how. Flip a coin.🙄 The store couldn't do it either.

From ad agency executive Lance Bell: Good Magic's 2019 fee was erroneously stated at $30,000 in a release sent 9/24. Good Magic's 2019 stud fee is $35,000.

I wouldn't even budge at the 'erroneously' stated $30,000.
