Interesting question........Commercial sales market is starting to see the value in Kitten's Joy as a stallion? Right as Mr. Ramsey exits and fee with H&D is a more reasonable $60,000......or BECAUSE he's no longer going to be flooding the market with his offspring to cheap mares?

The Declaration of Wars are really bombing late in the sale.....one sold for $4000, another sold for $5000, and another for $17,000.
Either he bred some poor mares or they're awfully unfortunate looking....

The article said "...he had a colic surgery as a foal." I presume that it's been a year or longer since that surgery and he is completely healed.
I'm also under the impression that surgery on foals is not as serious as on an adult, since babies heal fast if they're healthy. Correct me if I'm mistaken.

I feel like that would be the case. I know having your tonsils out as a child or young teen is better than having them out as an adult for that reason (example), so it would make sense if it were the same for animals.

Only thing I worry about is he’s most likely to get colic again and again. I was told that horses that have colic surgery will most likely get more colic episodes.

As soon as you cut into a horse's intestine to remove an impaction or perform a resection, the horse is automatically more likely to colic again. Once there is a seam that gets stitched up in the intestine, the scar tissue becomes a 'speedbump' of sorts along the gut, which can lead to another impaction.

If the colt had colic surgery where they just cut into the horse to adjust the position/massage the intestine, that wouldn't be as bad. But, if they cut into the intestine itself, the horse will be at risk for the rest of its life. We won't ever know what kind of surgery this American Pharoah colt had, though.

Colic Surgery is probably the reason he 'only' went for 800k. Also the reason the consigners decided to put him in Book 2 as opposed to Book 1 since they felt he'd stand out more. Being a half to two time BC champ secret circle out of a stakes winning mare and looking like a clone of his sire, I'm sure he'd have fetched 7 figures but for the colic surgery.

I had a filly that developed a meconium impaction at three days old that caused her to colic quite badly. She was taken to the a University of Guelph where she as supported with fluids and enemas. In the course of her stay the veterinarian and I obviously had a discussion about the potential for surgery, and I was told that surgery didn't always have a great outcome as the complication of adhesions was high in such young foals - the intestines can form scar tissue that adheres them to the body wall, or other structures within the abdominal cavity. Thankfully my filly recovered with just supportive care and didn't require surgery!
