526 is another War Front, a colt out of Treasure Trail (x Vertigineaux), from the family of Zenyatta. Treasure Trail is the dam of Long Island Sound. $650,000.
527, More Than Ready colt out of Trensa, dam of Hawkbill and Free Drop Billy. Only $190,000?

509, a colt by War Front out of Tiffany's Honor, who is a half to great broodmare Better Than Honor, was our first 7-figure sale today. Went for $1,100,000.

I thought he was a heck of a good-looking horse. I suppose he's off to Europe.

TVG showed 549, an Honor Code x Unenchantedevening (dam of Moonshine Memories) colt, in the back ring and talked about how Honor Code is stamping his offspring...and that colt looked just like his sire. He's also been given the name of Night Code. Went for $500,000.
554 is an AP colt x Up (IRE). I've noticed that Coolmore sent a lot of their nice grass mares to AP. They must have a feeling that his get are going to do well on turf. $750,000.

Edited to add... I'm in love with that Violence colt, he looks almost exactly in pattern and colour like an arabian mare I nearly bought many years ago.

You're assuming the $1.7 MM was a live bid. I'd suggest it was not, but now conceivably sets a level for them to market interests in the private market. I wish them luck.

That’s true but I wouldn’t be surprised if the live money did reach the seven figures. Especially if what they were looking for was valuation of the colt - I think I saw somewhere they were essentially shopping for partners. Chances are he may never be worth as much again, regardless of where the live money stopped. They claim he’s even bigger than Justify was at this age watch him not even make it to the track... or make it at 4 lol.

I see that 593, a Tapit X Wine Princess (x Azeri) colt went for $800,000. If his physical was good, that one could be a runner.
595, Tapit x Winter Memories, one of my favorite mares, went for only $145,000. I think he was a little small?

This is a facet of ALL auctions, not just horses and racing.

I've worked with a dealer only auto auction (largest in NA) for 11 years now, and 9 of those years right up on the block with the auctioneer on auction days.
All auctioneers 'fish' for bids at first until they receive an actual live bid. The slickest absolutely can slip in some faux bids to help keep moving a price forward. If there's a reserve set that's visible to them, and they've had live money up to a point, they will totally work bids to near the point of reserve, hoping to put a sale together.

In our world, we work what's called 'If bids'. That's a case where the live bidding hasn't met the reserve, but if it's somewhere close, we'll place an If bid at the price we got. From there, it goes to the front office and sales to be the intermediary between buyer and seller to try and work out a deal. Try and get the seller down in price, try and get more money out of the buyer...... we close about 50% of our If bids, and I'm sure there's similar systems in place for horse sales. They just advertise them all as Sold when they go off the block lol

727, Kitten's Joy x Brushwork, hammers at $725,000. Nice to see a KJ colt go that high. Respectable.
729, AP x Bsharpsonata (Pulpit), is a very pretty boy, and that's a very nice female family. 2nd dam is by Affirmed and is the dam of Backtalk. $1,400,000.

730, MdO x Bunairgead (IRE) colt keeps the action going, $1,200,000.
735 is a War Front colt x G1 winner Callback, her first foal. Attractive, but maybe a little shallow through the chest/shoulder area? Maybe so, as goes for just $125,000, low for a War Front.

Looking forward to 737, colt by Uncle Mo x the good racemare and producer, Cambiocorsa. Wonder if being a Cribber puts off some buyers?
Maybe...only $300,000.
ETA: 740 Ghostzapper x Capitulation filly, making her a full to Molly Morgan. Looks like she's going to be one of the higher-priced fillies this session... $1,025,000.

What are they looking for, beyond pedigree? Conformation? Deportment?

Conformation yes, movement ('the walk') as well is a huge factor. Vet exam. And plain ol' attractiveness. A flashy attractive horse will usually go for more than a horse equal in pedigree and maybe even slightly better conformation but otherwise ordinary looking head or plain colour. A charismatic yearling will draw more money.
Temperament is a factor as well for some buyers although what they look for here is much more variable from one person to the next, and it isn't as important as the other things.
Those are generalities of course. Other factors can also include, believe it or not, who the consigner is, as well as who the breeders are.

Hip 8 from @keenelandsales September Sale, Tapit Colt out of Havre de Grace bonds with his new owner, Mr. Mataichiro Yamamoto. The colt sure seems to love the camera, which should work well since Mr. Yamamoto is a movie producer! A star in the making!
