I think that the physical on these youngsters may be as...or more...important to buyers than their pedigrees. As we could see from all those Joe Neville Twitter photos of yearlings, many of these babies still have baby bellies, big heads and high rumps. It's a gamble to buy one and hope that it will grow up and out of those.

I wonder if part of it is the change in the sales format this year? It seems like there are more yearlings with lackluster pages in the first two days. I wonder if they'll go back to the shorter, more elite Book 1 format next year.

Honestly most of those pictures aren’t even taken at the right camera angle so I doubt they are reflective of the actual yearlings. Experienced buyers know that high croups and baby bellies are or for the course, they always grow out of those. A pretty head will always sell for more than an unattractive one but the big head is just emphasised from the picture angle.

I don’t think that’s the issue. I read a pretty interesting article on TDN the other night prior to the first session and the last couple of lines were fairly ominous. Harked back to another article I read several years ago on how the Bloodstock market is actually a good indicator for economic recovery, economic thriving and in some cases economic downturns. Could be something is afoot in the global economy, and more instability is bound to come.

Pretty sure it doesn’t help that a lot of horses who should be in Book 2 are in Book 1, I think there should be a happy middle, Because with the rather large number of book 1 horses this year buyers are probably keeping a tight hold on their wallets to survive through it or are being a little more suspicious of a given yearling’s quality.

LoL Yeah, looking at those photos now and most are clearly taken at unflattering angles (still nice to see them though). I don't think it's really the quality of the horses. Book 1 is so large this year that a good number of these yearlings really belong in a Book 2 with their pedigrees, but I don't doubt that they're all pretty nice physical specimens.
