Via Veneto18 has a minor infection and is being treated with antibiotics. The clinic gave her a very good report today and tell us Via Veneto18 will remain on antibiotics for about six more days. Here she is snuggling with Rosie.


The Big Snuggle...

Rosie and Via Veneto18 seem to spend a lot of time grooming each other while they're in the stall. When we at Foal Patrol see it on the livestream, we like to think of it as snugglingsmiley. Equine specialists will tell you that one of the most common social behaviors of horses is mutual grooming. Some studies have revealed that grooming reaffirms the bond between horses, reduces social tension within the group and in some cases "feel good" hormones are increased in horses that undergo mutual grooming sessions. This makes me nervous, it's like what happened with Via Veneto... an hour ago on the footage Arravale laid down and was obviously in labor... then back up and now just standing around eating hay. *worries*

don't worry yet Lurkey it's pretty normal for the first part to go up and down while babe is positioning itself to dive down the birth canal; its just pretty uncomfortable for mom while its happening. When her water breaks then it ALL SYSTEMS GO. And I hope that all goes smooth and timely as I think she had a dystocia before.

No foal yet, Chanteclaire was at the ready last night for that baby as all the appropriate signs where there with her behavior right down to sweating but with every check by staff she would stop the process. REALLY wants her privacy. She did lose a 2011 colt to dystocia and was left open for the next year so its understandable the extra vigilance. They have her in an outside paddock today that is accessible quickly and within easy view of staff on site so that's good.

i was sure she was going to have the foal last night after all her gyrations; i will continue watching her tonight and hope for an uneventful delivery! she definitely wants to be left alone.

Final foal of the year is a colt by Nyquist our of Biorhythm. Biorhythm was probably as fast of a filly as we’ve had for a half mile, won at Keeneland, Hollywood, twice at Santa Anita, and was stakes placed.

Just call it the spring foal-age: From January till May, foaling season dawns in the bluegrass hills of Lexington, Kentucky, and wobbly youngsters by the dozen begin springing up at local horse farms.

All of the foals born in the northern hemisphere share the same official “birthday”—January 1—based on the way Thoroughbreds are categorized. So horses born earlier in the year have the advantage of a longer maturation period before they begin competing in races restricted by age (the Kentucky Derby, for instance, is open only to three-year-olds).

Indulging in this cuteness overload comes easy—you can book tours of Lexington horse farms through the nonprofit Horse Country. And if you head to Mill Ridge Farm, just southwest of downtown, your guide might well be Price Bell Jr., whose grandmother founded the farm in 1962. Her winning horses not only brought acclaim to Mill Ridge but to Kentucky stock in general. Today, the farm still breeds and boards mares and raises foals—since 2000, says Bell, Mill Ridge has raised or sold thirty-four grade-one race winners, an impressive number considering most horses have just a 0.5 percent chance of ever winning one of these top-tier races. “We’ve been very blessed this year to have mostly uncomplicated births,” Bell says. The most recent blog post on Arravale says she is dripping milk from two of her teats on her udder and that she will probably foal today, currently (10:59 AM Alaska time) the stall is empty with the stall door open, I'm assuming it is because she is still out in the paddock, they mentioned that if she started going into labor while in the paddock they would bring her into the stall immediately so the door is probably open so they don't have to mess with opening it if this happens.

Been watching her too. A few minutes ago, she gave a little belly kick and looked around. I notice she has her nose at her bucket but it is turned up. I guess she's getting "twingy". Would love to stay and watch but gotta feed the chickens. With my luck, she will probably drop that foal like Bird Town did, in just minutes. LOL I can imagine how she feels, big as she is, please get this baby out...NOW! LOL

short_lead, good observation regarding the feed bucket. Does anyone familiar with foaling know why the feed bucket would be flipped over?

Welp they just put grain in it and now she's eating.

Yep, and she'd been waiting for that for a long time. LOL But she has been looking back around quite a bit so she must be getting uncomfortable. Hope baby comes soon!

Probably about 45 minutes ago you could visibly see that she is having what appeared to be contractions to my untrained eye
