I could be wrong, but I believe that Lemons Forever is the first Kentucky Oaks winner to be honored as Broodmare of the Year. Quite an honor, and well deserved, too.

Yeah, they got that reversed. I think one of her Perfect Soul's raced but didn't win. Hopefully, they'll edit the article.

Does anyone know who Justify’s dam Stage Magic was bred to in 2016? Also 2017? Thanks!

Thanks, very interesting. Gunther made it sound like the yearling was a colt. Kept saying “half-brother”. One to keep an eye on...

He must have meant the Will Take Charge. Wowza. I love that breeding.

Yes thanks. I was confusing year foaled with year bred. Can’t wait to see a photo of that yearling!

It's interesting that Justify's half-brother is by Will Take Charge, because with his hunky size, red coat and big white blaze, IMHO Justify looks a WTC son, and not at all like the usual Scat Daddy. :P ;)

He has a pretty awesome looking blaze. :)

As for Stage Magic, she didn't foal until April 8th last year, so she is probably due soon. She definitely looks pregnant in those pics from February at the link.

Justify definitely takes after his dam’s coloring. Her WTC yearling sure is a looker!

Harris Farms announces passing of stakes winner Velvet Mesquite
Velvet Mesquite, a multiple stakes winner for Harris Farms, was euthanized on Thursday after complications of colic surgery, the farm announced on Saturday.

Velvet Mesquite underwent surgery for colic, but suffered a severe knee injury when she tried to rise after the operation.

"She will be sadly missed," the farm's statement said.

Velvet Mesquite, 8, won 6 of 22 starts and earned $461,946. She won two stakes at Santa Anita and was second in the Grade 3 Sen. Ken Maddy Stakes in 2015.

Velvet Mesquite delivered a foal by California Chrome in March and had been bred back to Clubhouse Ride. The farm said the California Chrome foal is being raised by a nurse mare.

How sad. :(
I think Harris Farms has had more than their fair share of misfortune in the last few years. They lost the venerable Unusual Heat in 2017, although he was an aged stallion, but also the younger Thorn Song (2014), Heatseeker (2016) and Lucky Pulpit (Dec. 30, 2017).

Felt this needed an airing on Epsom-eve. Balanchine beating Wind In Her Hair in the ‘94 Oaks. The former went on the beat the boys at the Curragh & the latter to become a legendary broodmare in Japan... Hope Godolphin don’t mind me borrowing this special pic from their website!

(note: Wind In Her Hair, right, is the dam of Deep Impact (JPN) and just turned 27 - she is pensioned at Northern Horse Park and can be frequently seen in the Twitter feed of @nabecci)

Thanks for sharing! I remember reading about the race in my copy of Bloodhorse. The 11 yr old me loved the name Wind in Her Hair.
