How terribly sad. She was such a gorgeous little filly. A sad reminder that there is no fairness or justice in this world. Sigh.

RIP little one.

Unfortunately the Marketing Mix foal died at 24 hours old. She was pronounced healthy but as the day went on she didn’t act normal, and the vets found that her colon and intestines were not able to function. Hard to believe that such a strong robust foal could be malformed but it does happen. We take the best care possible of all our horses, but the hopes are highest and the ties strongest for the ones who’s family we have raced. Thankfully Marketing Mix is healthy and will hopefully have some more foals for us.

Mortgage The House delivered a whopper by five time G1 winner FLINTSHIRE last night. Loads of bone scope & strength. She’s a 1/2 to 2 stakes winners. One day Flintshire will be a [global emoji] leading turf sire. He has it all. Pedigree, durability & the ability to accelerate.

The Chrome x Stayclassysandiego colt is really nice. Does anyone here think he will turn gray like his dam? Seems to be hints of gray around his eyes, on his muzzle and lower legs, but I'm no expert on these things.

He's a very adult shade of bay with really no foal camo. He could go either way but I'd lean towards grey.

He doesn't really seem to have any goggles, it's hard to say. They'll have a better idea after his first shedding.
He's a cutie patootie!

The colt looks like he could be Maizelle's own foal, they match so nicely in coloring and bling.

Question for the breeders among us, is there any answer as to why some mares reject their foals?

(I don't know why I'm even asking, because it happens with human moms sometimes, too. Mine abandoned me when I was about 10 months old.)

There is no definitive answer as to why. But you can read a fair bit about it here:
https://thehorse.com/14826/foal-rejection/

It happens in other species too. Some females are just not meant to be mothers... some are not ready the first time. If I had to hazard a guess I would put my money on oxytocin levels (which are absolutely vital for bonding in humans) but I don't think they've ever done a study on it in horses from that angle.
I also wonder if the mare senses anything unusual about the foal - in some other animal species for a long time it was believed the tendency to reject the young is linked to the offspring's chances of survival (I do not know if this is still the case/consensus within the scientific community).
