Not entirely uncommon with colts... at least that is what I was always taught working on a Halfi stud farm.

"Normal" gestation for a horse is 320 to 370 days. Most people use day 340 as their approximate due date. For a mare to foal on a day in the 350s (which would qualify as "weeks late") is not at all unusual.

Ah, I didn't know there was such a large variation (I knew a week or even two wasn't a big deal, the plural just made me go

Didn't I read when Zenyatta's foal died that carrying longer than normal can increase the risk of meconium aspiration? (IIRC, that foal was pretty late.)

Cairo Prince x Shovalla colt born Valentine's Day (credit: GMB racing). Dam is by Ghostzapper... and has an interesting bottom half of the pedigree.
