Giant's Causeway is such a legend. Hopefully he stays sound and happy for many more years.

Da Big Hoss retired to stud in Ohio

Da Big Hoss, a Grade 2 winner and multiple course record holder, has been retired from racing and will enter stud at Poplar Creek Horse Center in Bethel, Ohio, for the 2018 breeding season, where he will stand for a private fee.

The 7-year-old son of Lemon Drop Kid finished his career with 12 wins in 22 starts for earnings of $1,551,696. Excelling at long-distance turf races, his victories include the Grade 2 Elkhorn Stakes, two editions of the Grade 3 Kentucky Turf Cup, the Grade 3 American St. Leger Stakes, the Grade 3 John B. Connally Turf Cup, the Belmont Gold Cup Invitational, and the John’s Call Stakes.

He owns track records for two miles on turf at Belmont Park and 1 1/2 miles on turf at Sam Houston Race Park.

Da Big Hoss is unraced since November 2016. He returned to the work tab in January after a nine-month layoff for three timed workouts at Gulfstream Park before the decision was made to retire him.

“He came up with a little tendon issue,” said Robin Murphy of Poplar Creek Horse Center. “He’s going to be fine, but he’s 7 years old, and having a spot for him to retire, that’s the best thing for him. He’s proven himself.”

The stallions Korea has acquired over the years are some very good horses. Is there a yearling sale on the Peninsula, or does the Korean stock get sold elsewhere? Or are they hanging on to every horse to build their breeding and racing industry?

Mostly the latter from the last articles I was reading, however I am certain they are also revving up for an eventual sales market between China and Japan as well...

Eye of the Leopard Relocated to Minnesota

Eye of the Leopard, the Canadian champion 3-year-old colt of 2009 and Queen's Plate winner, has been relocated from Calumet Farm to Osborne Farm near Cambridge, Minn., for the 2018 breeding season. His stud fee will be $1,500 live foal stands and nurses.

"Not only is he physically impressive but he is also a champion, by a champion and out of a champion," stated Osborne Farm owners Joyce and Rick Osborne in an announcement about the stallion's relocation. "We are excited about this opportunity to bring a stallion of such quality to Minnesota. He will be a tremendous addition to our breeding program and provide the region with some of the top bloodlines in the game."

The 12-year-old son of A.P. Indy is out of Eye of the Sphynx, who was the 2004 Canadian champion 3-year-old filly and winner of the Labatt Woodbine Oaks. The daughter of Smart Strike is also the dam of grade 1-placed, grade 2 winner Deceptive Vision and graded-placed, black-type winner Hotep, who are both full siblings to Eye of the Leopard.

Well the Koreans have the half-brother to that ham up above rolling on his back.

Take Charge Indy is showing great promise as a sire in his first crop. Wish he had stayed here, but understand why he was sold.

We were talking recently about this guy in the New Conformation Photos thread because of his odd looking shadowing. He raced all over the world, including Royal Ascot, the Melbourne Cup, the Japan Cup, and Meydan, and he won the American St. Leger Stakes at Arlington in 2012. Gone too soon.

Novara Park loses foundation stallion Jakkalberry

Promising stallion Jakkalberry has died at the age of 12.

Exciting young Novara Park stallion Jakkalberry has died following a short illness.

“It’s unbelievable,” Novara Park manager Ray Knight told http://www.theinformant.co.nz. “Sometimes shit happens in this game as we know, but this has hit us hard.

“It was essentially a gut infection, a colic-type thing, and he went downhill very quickly. We did all that we could to save him, but he died around 1 o’clock this morning. It was so sudden – he was fine, then he was sick, then suddenly he was in really bad shape.

“It’s devastating for everybody, but in particular I feel so sorry for Luigi (Muollo, stud owner), who invested so much energy and effort into this horse. It had just been starting to pay off as well, with great results at the sales and very good signs from his first crop of runners. It’s just very sad to be cut off at the pass now.”

The son of Storming Home was a half-brother to two Group One winners, and he himself scored at the highest level in the Gran Premio di Milano. He also placed in the Melbourne Cup and Dubai Sheema Classic.

Jakkalberry took up stud duties as the foundation stallion at Novara Park in 2014, and his progeny have sold up to $440,000 at Karaka.

First-crop runner Thomas Aquinas placed on debut last month before finishing a close sixth in the Karaka Million, and he will line up in tomorrow’s Gr. 3 Reid & Harrison Slipper at Matamata.
