General a Rod retired, will stand in Indiana

General a Rod, a Grade 1-placed stakes winner, has been retired from racing and will stand at Hidden Springs Farm in Palmyra, Ind., for the 2018 breeding season at an advertised fee of $3,500.

The 6-year-old son of Roman Ruler finished his ontrack career with five wins in 18 starts for earnings of $553,177, highlighted by wins in the listed Gulfstream Park Derby and Challenger Stakes. He also finished second in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes, third in the Grade 1 Florida Derby, and competed in all three legs of the 2014 Triple Crown, including a fourth in the Preakness Stakes.

General a Rod most recently raced for Skychai Racing and Sand Dollar Stable and trainer Mike Maker. He also spent time in the barn of Todd Pletcher.

He will stand at Arrow Stud, Hokkaido, Japan.

Swept Overboard(USA), 1997H. End Sweep(USA) x Sheer Ice(USA) by Cutlass(USA), died of illness at Breeders Stallion Station where he had been standing on November 1st 2017.
The popular stallion in Japan sired most recently multiple G1 winner Red Falx(JPN)[o/o Vermouth(JPN) by Sunday Silence(USA)], winner of the Sprint Stakes Octover 1st 2017.
Pas de Trois(JPN) 2007H [o/o Grand Pas de Deux(JPN) by Fuji Kiseki(JPN)] is standing at Lex Stud.
I have been a big fan of Swept Overboard since he was racing.
May he rest in Peace.

Battle of Midway Retired to WinStar

‘TDN Rising Star’ Battle of Midway (Smart Strike–Rigoletta, by Concerto), upset winner of the GI Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Del Mar and also third in this year’s GI Kentucky Derby, has been retired from racing and will take up stud duty in 2018 at WinStar Farm. His fee will be $20,000 S&N.

The $410,000 FTSAUG yearling graduate, campaigned in partnership by Don Alberto Stable and WinStar Farm, was trained by Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer.

“We are extremely proud of Battle of Midway and the tremendous performance he put forth in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, passing such a fast horse as Sharp Azteca and doing so in such a fast time,” said Elliott Walden, WinStar President & CEO.

Too bad about Battle of Midway. After his win in the BC Dirt Mile, it seems like he would be a very good four-year-old. This retirement feels like his connections don't have confidence in him, and that it's best to retire off that good G1 win.

BoM could have raced on!!! The horse ran 10 times this year and got better and better! He's clearly a sound and robust individual. Smart Strike got better with age, and this horse was likely to do so too.
I wonder who will leave the roster next???

I think they have the KRA and JBBA on speed dial - maybe Revolutionary or Fed Biz? They didn't wait for the first crop to hit the track with Take Charge Indy or Summer Bird, so really anyone can go.

FWIW, I know that not all commercial breeding operations in Kentucky can keep lower-end stallions on their rosters forever, and almost all of them will sell said stallions or relocate them. WinStar just seems to do it at a much quicker pace, with stallions yet to prove themselves... because they are stocking their barn with new, sound, race-fit three year old stallions.

Danon Ballade will become the first son of Deep Impact to stand in the UK following his relocation to Alan and Tim Varey's Batsford Stud in Gloucestershire, where he will stand at a fee of £4,000.

"Danon Ballade ran 26 times and 25 of those were Graded or Listed races, proving his physical soundness, tough approach to racing and willingness to be a racehorse," said acting agent Nicola Naylor of Readswood Stud in Cheshire.

"He's a lovely, big horse with a very nice temperament. He's very correct and very straight.

"He was Deep Impact's first Graded winner in Japan, so he set the ball rolling for him there, and hopefully he can do the same for him in Britain.

With Distinction to stand in Korea

With Distinction, a regular presence near the top of Florida’s sire lists, has been sold to stand in Korea, beginning with the 2018 breeding season.

The 16-year-old son of Storm Cat arrived in Korea on Nov. 3, and previously resided at Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds in Florida, where he was advertised for $7,500 in 2017.

With Distinction has sired eight crops of racing age, with 318 winners and combined progeny earnings in excess of $23 million. His top runners include Grade 3 winner Distinctiv Passion, Grade 1-placed stakes winner Merit Man, and Grade 3-placed stakes winner Decisive Moment.

The stallion established his reputation in Korea with Nobody Catch Me, winner of the Group 3 Busan Mayor’s Trophy in 2014.

American Patriot to join the Darley roster in Japan

American Patriot, G1 Maker’s Mile Stakes winner and from the family of Symboli Kris S, has been retired from racing and will join the Darley stallion roster in Japan for 2018.

Having broken his maiden, American Patriot went on to take the G3 Kent Stakes in record time. His finest hour on the racecourse came almost exactly a year later, when he flew down the Keeneland straight to win the 1600m G1 Maker’s Mile Stakes, beating previous G1 winner What A View in the process.

American Patriot hails from a very active family, with his half-brother and sister both reaching the winners’ enclosure in 2017. His dam is herself a full-sister to G1 Dubai World Cup winner Well Armed and is from the immediate female family of multiple Champion and perennial leading Japanese sire, Symboli Kris S.

American Patriot becomes the first G1-winning son on the turf of successful American stallion War Front to stand in Japan.
