Grade 1 winner Noble Bird retired, will stand stud in Florida

Grade 1 winner Noble Bird has been retired from racing and will stand the 2018 breeding season at Ocala Stud in Ocala, Fla. A fee for the 6-year-old Birdstone horse will be announced at a later time.

Noble Bird retires with seven wins in 23 starts for earnings of $1,327,945, highlighted by wins in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap, Grade 2 Fayette Stakes, Grade 3 Pimlico Special, and listed Lukas Classic. His Fayette effort set a track record at Keeneland for 1 1/8 miles at 1:47.75.

Mark Casse trained Noble Bird for owner John Oxley.

Thanks for posting this news. The statistics are so interesting. Through October 17, 2017, The Jockey Club reports that 1,342 stallions covered 31,863 mares in North America during 2017. In round numbers, 5% of stallions had a book size of greater than 125 mares, and that group of stallions covered 30% of mares bred. Put it another way, 95% of all active Thoroughbred stallions in North America attracted only 60% of available mares.

Makes me ponder the mysteries of the unknown and unknowable what ifs.

I don't understand why he is so unpopular. He produced some some really good racehorses in his first few years at stud: Go Between, Sealy Hill, Point Ashley, Coil, Points of Grace.

Jersey Town relocating to Road’s End Farm in British Columbia

Grade 1 winner Jersey Town will relocate to Road’s End Farm in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada for the 2018 season, where he will stand for an advertised fee of $2,000 Canadian.

The 11-year-old son of Speightstown previously resided at Darby Dan Farm in Lexington, Ky., and will continue to stand as property of owner Charles Fipke.

“We are very excited about bringing a horse of Jersey Town’s caliber to British Columbia,” said Road’s End Farm owner Jack Bennett. “He should make a major contribution to the breeding industry in the Pacific Northwest.”

Jersey Town has sired two crops of racing age, with 44 winners and combined progeny earnings of more than $1.1 million. His runners are led by U.A.E. Group 3-placed Bee Jersey, U.S. stakes winner Jersey Justice, and stakes-placed Ever Wonder.

On his own accord, Jersey Town won 6 of 21 starts for earnings of $819,668, highlighted by victories in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile and Grade 2 Kelso Handicap. He also finished in the money in two editions of the Grade 1 Forego Stakes, two additional runnings of the Grade 2 Kelso Handicap, and single editions of the Grade 3 Longacres Mile Handicap and Bold Ruler Handicap.

In Canada, Jersey Town finished second in the 2009 running of the Grade 3 British Columbia Derby at Hastings Racecourse.

Homebred in Kentucky by Fipke, Jersey Town is out of the multiple Grade 1-winning Belong to Me mare Jersey Girl, who is the dam of five winners from seven runners. He is from the family of Grade 2 winner Valid Wager and Australian Group 3 winner St Petersburg.

"Mr. Fipke has foals by Jersey Town from some top mares still to come and will be supporting the horse in British Columbia as well, so Jersey Town represents a great opportunity for breeders to participate in a stallion with a lot of future upside," said Sid Fernando, president of Werk Thoroughbred Consultants, Inc., and an advisor to Fipke.

Grade 1 winner Klimt retired to stud at Darby Dan

Grade 1 winner Klimt has been retired from racing and will enter stud at Darby Dan Farm for an advertised fee of $10,000.

The 3-year-old son of Quality Road will be offered under the farm's Share the Upside program, in which breeders can earn a lifetime breeding right to Klimt, either by breeding two mares in 2018 or breeding a mare in 2018 and 2019. Two live foals must be produced with either option. Klimt will also be offered for $10,000 under a standard one-year stands and nurses contract.

Klimt retired with three wins in eight starts for earnings of $468,960, highlighted by wins in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity and Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes. He also placed in the Grade 1 Frontrunner Stakes and Grade 3 Los Alamitos Derby.

The colt raced for owner Kaleem Shah, beginning his career with trainer Bob Baffert, then moving to Art Sherman.

He won a G1 and is by a popular young sire, which seems to be enough these days.

Watching TVG and the fellow for TM was just on. He announced that any mare sold in foal to California Chrome can breed back for the new owner to Chrome for $30k ($10k off). Any mare bought that happens to not produce a live foal for the new owner gets a free breed back.

Not sure how often this sort of deal occurs for breeders.

I'm not surprised that Highland Reel is finally calling an end to his long, stellar career. For Ballydoyle to keep him in competition through his fifth year is unusual for that crew, and I'm grateful that I got to watch him show his class all over the world. Talk about a horse who 'danced every dance.'
More usual is for Coolmore to hustle their three-year-old stars off to the shed. I'd have loved to see how Caravaggio did as a four-year-old, as sprinters often get even better as they mature, but I knew that wasn't going to happen with the big, steel-grey colt. With the loss of Scat Daddy, I'm sure the market for his best sons is strong.
Churchill joins several other Galileo sons, like Australia and Gleneagles, in addition to the Big Guy, Galileo himself. Are there enough mares out there for so much Galileo blood?
