Memories of Silver died last week at the age of 24 - https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing ... y-dan-farm
She was one of my favorites, and the dam of another two of my favorites.

On my bucket list...
Surely this is as close to paradise as it gets for horse lovers
Surely this is as close to paradise as it gets for horse lovers
More: https://www.thoroughbredracing.com/arti ... se-lovers/In the summer of 1989, the Northern Horse Park opened in Hokkaido, Japan. Now, as it approaches its 30th year, those behind it continue to revere the horse and desire to share the joys of equestrian life with others.
At any given time, there are about 80 horses featuring 12 different breeds on Northern Horse Park. Ranging from retired racehorses to trick ponies, there is truly something for anyone who enjoys horses. The park was established by Katsumi Yoshida, of Northern Farm, and today his daughter, Akiko Yonemoto, is the director and marketing manager.
“The aim then was basically the same as now,” Yonemoto said. “At the time, my father felt that many Japanese didn’t know about horses, and he wanted a place where the culture of the horse was accessible to everyone.”
Sharing the family treasure: Wind In Her Hair, dam of Deep Impact, is popular with visitors to Northern Horse Park. She is pictured there with Akiko Yonemoto, NHP director and daughter of its founder, Katsumi Yoshida. Photo: Amanda Duckworth
....
One of the most popular horses for Bonding Time is a 26-year-old pensioned broodmare. Upon being told her name, most of the people wandering up to pet her while she grazes break into a smile. Although she was a G1 winner in her own right, Wind In Her Hair is best known as the dam of the legendary Deep Impact.
“Her son is very popular, so my father thought that Wind In Her Hair must also be very popular, so he decided to pension her here,” said Yonemoto. “Also, this is our family treasure, so we want to share her with the world.”

I don't understand this paragraph though, maybe it is worded confusing. Because the way it reads to me, only one mare has produced 2 winners of Breeders Cup races and that isn't the case.
Maybe they should have said "Only one mare has produced 2 winners of the same Breeders Cup Race. Hasili who produced two winners of the BC F/M Turf, Banks Hill(2001) and Intercontinental(2005). Because both Sweet Life and Primal Force produced 2 winners of Breeders Cup races, they just weren't the same race."There have been 305 Breeders’ Cup race winners since the event’s inception in 1984, and only one mare, Hasili, has produced more than one horse that won a Breeders’ Cup race – Hasili foaled Banks Hill, who won the Filly and Mare Turf in 2001, and Intercontinental, who won the same race in 2005."

I've known some Belgians...and their heads were prettier than this.
That white spot on his muzzle doesn't exactly flatter him, either.

Can't imagine how heavy headed he must be to ride. You would develop some strong wrists that's for sure. No dressage in his future.

I'm someone who can usually find beauty in any horse....however that one I am having a real hard time. Its not just his head either, I find him unappealing in so many ways. Poor sad looking boy.
Edit to add: I just realized he is a yearling, hopefully he grows out of some of that awkwardness.

The good thing is that looks don't win races. If he's got any talent, his looks won't matter. And who knows, perhaps he will be the epitome of the "ugly duckling" story.

Let's hope. I have seen photos of John Henry as a wee one, and definately not part of the pretty pony club. Even as an adult, he was not the best looking- but sure could run.Ridan_Remembered wrote:The good thing is that looks don't win races. If he's got any talent, his looks won't matter. Read a story that Slew out rejected from a sale due to his conformation- another one- but I thought he turned it around later on.

For those who are interested, DRF posted two new photos of Songbird in her paddock at Timber Town Stable, where owner Mandy Pope boards her broodmare band. Songbird was wearing front wraps. She was turned out with Welcoming, a beautiful daughter of Tapit out of Stormy Welcome by Storm Cat. Stormy Welcome's maternal granddam is the famous daughter of Secretariat named Weekend Surprise, dam of A. P. Indy, Summer Squall and five other graded stakes horses. Indy, of course, sired Pulpit, sire of Tapit. Welcoming has three crosses of Secretariat through his daughters Terlingua and Weekend Surprise.

@Serenassong, the great Sunday Silence was considered to not be correct in the stifle and front legs, but look what he accomplished after being rejected by some of the most savvy horsemen and women in North America. There is an article on Bloodhorse.com about the Ben Walden Jr. dispersal (https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing ... -walden-jr). In it, Mr. Walden said, "My interest over the years has been pedigrees, and in some ways the business has passed me by. There is such a profound focus on the individual today. If you stand in the winner's circle at Saratoga you will see the emphasis on physicality, and I'm still a pedigree guy. Sometimes when you reach for those deep families you have to sacrifice on the physical side and that's worked against me a little bit over the last five or six years. Everybody wants that beautiful individual, and they don't care so much about pedigree."
I think failure to appreciate the importance of pedigrees is a profound mistake. For example, I love Songbird a lot, but if I was able to purchase one of the two mares shown in the linked DRF piece, I would take Welcoming because of her incredible bottom line and broodmare's pedigree.
