Was looking through the FT Sratoga sale catalog going on today.

Remember how hot Mr Greeley was? Was getting some really nice mares.

Of course, Forestry is probably the most remembered.

Anyone else?

Both Tiznow and Lemon Drop Kid started out hot with their first few crops, then faded away for 3-4 years before they came roaring back.

Cant remember- was Smarty ever " Hot"- like for his first or second season? He's doing quite well with his foals in Uruguay FWIW.

Birdstone after having Mine that Bird and Summer Bird in his first crop. He’s had some other decent winners, but nothing like his first crop.

Forestry was the 1st one I thought of.

Hot hot hot......and fizzled out....

No, only for his 1st few season's stud fee. Much like Point Given.

I don't think Mr. Greeley's stud fee went down because he wasn't hot anymore. I just think it was market adjustment because of the financial crisis in the world at the time. Then he died.

The reverse is also true sometimes. Stallions start off slow and get better offspring later in their careers.

Ghostzapper prime example.

Hard to impress anyone off that initial $200,000 stud fee though....

Malibu Moon comes to mind as a more gradual rising star in the breeding industry. I think he started off in 2000 at Country Life in Maryland for about $3k. Now he's at Spendthrift for $75k and his babies are hot commodities at the sales.

Over the years, I think several Coolmore stallions fit this bill.

Not to derail the thread, but the premature death of Effinex made me wonder about other stallions who left only a single crop behind. Saint Liam comes to mind.

Dubai Millennium, who now seems a huge loss, considering his one crop produced a stallion like Dubawi.

Sunriver died with only one crop. He did get G1W Weemissfrankie from that crop, too. And War Pass had just one US crop (he had just returned from shuttling when he dropped dead), with G1W Java's War and G2W/G1P Revolutionary-both at stud now-being his most notable progeny.

Sunriver had 2 crops.

Sea Cadet died shortly after going to stud and only had a few foals. He didn't have a tail and danced alot of dances in the early 90s. I just looked him up and he was owned by Verne Winchell, whose family operates Winchell Thoroughbreds.

How could I have forgotten Dubai Millennium? And I agree; siring such a potent stallion like Dubawi from his first crop you have to wonder what kind of dynasty he might have established.

He has a decent record as a broodmare sire as well, his daughter, Mizna, has produced Japanese MGSW Decipher.
