For his victory, the 7-year-old gelding by Danehill Dancer earned an automatic expenses-paid berth in the G1 Breeders' Cup Mile.
Having already won the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury and the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot this season, Richard Fahey's Ribchester was unsurprisingly a warm order to complete a Group One hat-trick, especially after the late withdrawal of dual 2000 Guineas winner Churchill.
The 8-13 favorite made much of the running in the deteriorating conditions, but William Buick was hard at work in the saddle with two furlongs to run and the Andrew Balding-trained Here Comes When battled his way to the front in the hands of champion jockey Jim Crowley.
Just when it looked as though Ribchester was fading, he rallied to the cause, but while he was making ground again at the finish, Here Comes When held on by a neck. Lightning Spear was third.

“Caravaggio was shod before the G1 July Cup and the day before he was just a little bit footy,” said O’Brien. “We changed the style of the shoe that he was wearing to one with a bit of rubber between the foot and the shoe itself. He was 100% when we put them on.”
Regarding Sunday’s performance, O’Brien said, “He just didn’t travel the way he can travel, and he ran again in those shoes on Sunday. Ryan [Moore] came back in and said he’s just not getting any traction. The rearing up in the stalls is something we can sort, but when he came out Ryan said he’s changing and not feeling comfortable. He pulled out very sore, so there is obviously an issue with the shoes that he is wearing. It’s a bit like a fella running in a sprint with spikes on him and the fella alongside running with slippers on. He is a front-wheel-drive horse–he works from the front. We think there is an issue there and especially when he was so sore.”

It was the 6-year-old’s 16th barrier trial and first win. She covered the distance in :59.98 over soft (5) ground with Hugh Bowman in the irons. The Chris Waller trainee was followed by ‘TDN Rising Star’ and GSW and G1SP Pariah (Aus) (Redoute’s Choice {Aus}) in second, with MGSW and G1 Doncaster Mile runner-up Happy Clapper (Aus) (Teofilo {Ire}) taking third.
“I guess winning the trial is unusual for her,” Waller told racenet.com.au. “Both Hugh and I thought she might be doing a little bit too well at this stage of her preparation and just needed a stronger hit-out than normal because she’s a bit heavier than what she normally is. So with today’s trial, I think she’s right on track.”
Winx is scheduled to kick off her season in the G2 Warwick S. over 1400 metres at Randwick on Aug. 19, with a third consecutive A$3-million G1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) the long-term goal at Moonee Valley on Oct. 28.

Even though his life was tragically cut short, IMHO he may turn out to be one of the best turf sires we've seen. What a loss.
It's the 5f, G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes, featuring the American pocket rocket, Lady Aurelia. She may be facing a strong challenger in Battaash, who is in beastly-good form right now. Same time.
