Poor Carla. Unfortunately a tumour in the nasal cavity is a death sentence. They tend to be very aggressive and are usually inoperable.

I hope, too, that she stays healthy and strong at least for a little while longer. She deserves it.

Sometimes, with love, compassion and care- these things can reverse and miracles do happen. Let's hope that is the case.

Some of you may remember from last December when Press Exclusive was discovered at the OLEX sale in Ontario. She was emaciated and had some serious injuries because she had fallen in the truck that brought her to the sale. Mindy Lovell took her in, knowing well she might not survive -- and I honestly believed at the time that the odds were against a happy ending to this story.

Boy. Was I ever wrong.

Update on Tribal Legend tonight from Megan. He's been thoroughly examined and was gelded today. His health is good, EXCEPT: he has old slab fractures in both knees and already arthritis is setting in. He is 4. Vet recommended a series of injections to see if they can help him "toward soundness."

Looks like Cymple Rhythm's last race was in Aug 2008. Gotta wonder where she's been since then. Sigh...one horse at a time. I'm on it!

Remember Me Rescue pulled 8yo gelding Handsomely from a low-end Texas auction tonight. He ran 18 days ago at Louisiana Downs.

Great news for Handsomely! From RMR's FB page:

"Handsomely Update! He has been adopted by Cassandra Buckley Naupac, the jockey who won her first race on him. He will be moving to LaGrange, KY in a couple of weeks, as soon as his quarantine time is over. We wanted to thank Handsomely's generous breeder Elaine Bodine Carroll for donating to RMR and helping us continue to pull horses from bad situations and also thanks to the folks who have offered to take Handsomely to Kentucky for Cassandra. This couldn't have worked out better. I believe that in every horses past their are/were people who love them. No horse should ever be given away or sold at auction without first doing a little homework into their past. They touch our lives in ways that are hard to explain. In his case they wouldn't have had to look far to find many, many people that would have given him a home. Good luck Cassandra and Handsomely in your new life."

This is one of the most frustrating things about rescue -- for a lot of horses, there is someone in their backstory who would help -- IF they only knew, and if an owner or trainer had simply taken the time to do their homework before "giving" them away or sending them off to auction.

Whoo hoo! SCTR got her, via Megan Gaynes' (of AHR) on-site bid, for $100. Now they just have to get her from Turlock to Norco!

They could still use your dollars. Cymple Rhythm will obviously be a long-term, expensive rehab project -- and they now have 2 hospice cases as well. And while SCTR was among the first 3 groups to receive TAA certification, and at some point they will receive money from TAA -- at the moment they have no clue as to when or how much that will be.

That's fabulous! Sounds like they got lots of donors very quickly too She had me at that big brown eye, lol. What a great network they have...if anyone can restore her to health, I'm sure SCTR can! Looking forward to positive updates on this one...I hope, I hope...

From Auction Horse Rescue's FB page. This pertains to Cymple Rhythm, but mostly I'm posting it as an example of the effort sometimes required to pull off a "simple" auction rescue -- and of the incredible generosity of many involved.

"It's 4am and we're loaded up, with an emaciated Thoroughbred mare set up in a pampered show horse box stall (on the trailer), just in case she's too weak to stay upright for her 5-hour journey. To be safe, she'll be laid over for a few days in Canyon Country, before finishing her journey to Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue's foster in Apple Valley.

I'm always a big proponent of rescuing broodmares together -- even the act of separating the older Quarter Horse mares to load them, resulted in a great deal of middle-of-the-night calling for each other. They're now side-by-side, contentedly munching on their hay. They will also layover til Saturday, when Summer's "rescue train" can pick the two girls up.

Huge thank you to Derek Hunt and Stephanie Sherman for hooking up one of their amazing rigs at a moments notice, making the middle of the night 10-hour drive, to transport an emergency load of rescues! Safe driving...for me, too!"

I look at people like this: SCTR frantically fundraising on just one of many Saturday nights; Megan and her crew spending at least 10 hours on an auction lot; 2 people who, at the drop of a hat, haul out their best rig and do a 10-hr round trip to pick up 3 rescues; those who find space, at a moment's notice, to foster/quarantine, a needy horse or three; etc., etc., . . . . And then I look at those breeders/sellers who won't kick in, what is it, $100?, to the JC fund when they register their horses or won't kick in a fraction of a percent of the price of the horse they just sold.

And it just doesn't compute.

yesterday, we received a text with a partial tattoo and a description of color and markings of a horse at auction. For once, it was easy to discern which horse it was - Cymple Rhythm, a former race mare and a foal of 2003. Then, the photos started arriving... [photos omitted]

We had a space for her, but no funds to support the rescue and lengthy rehabilitation of another horse in desperate need of help.


We asked you if you would help and so many of you responded and so quickly - thank you all so much! Cymple Rhythm is the type of horse our rescue was established specifically to help: a thoroughbred ex-racehorse at highest risk, and without intervention - a doomed life. Under the saddle she was ridden through the auction in, lay this... [photo omitted]


Thanks to you and your generous donations, we were able to say yes - please rescue her for us! A huge thanks also to Megan Gaynes of Auction Horses Rescue for alerting us to Cymble Rhythm, bidding on our behalf, and arranging transport back to southern California.

It would be interesting to see the photos that were omitted in that post but, if I had to guess...what lay under the saddle were horrible sores and/or a skinny backbone with its hair worn off.
